The 26-year-old was reportedly handling a duffel bag when a gun inside the bag fired as he dropped off his car to be looked at, police said.

“Zurlon was a dude you rooted for—an undrafted, talented, hardworking player who always seemed to have a smile on his face. His personality was contagious,” former teammate Matt Overton told ESPN. “He will always be our brother. He is family. … Today is a tough day for many. Prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.”

Tipton played 16 games over two seasons for the Colts before being released by the team in December.

Tipton played college football at Central Michigan, and on Tuesday the university called his death “shocking and tragic.”
