Wright, 10, had been unresponsive and in critical condition since Monday, family told ABC affiliate WCIV. The Colleton County Sheriffโ€™s Office found Wright unconscious in the nurseโ€™s office after the school called 911 for a student who had collapsed.

While the fight remains under investigation, another fifth-grade student involved in the fight has been suspended from the school indefinitely. Records indicate a resource officer was on the schoolโ€™s campus at the time of the incident.

โ€œRaniya was a wonderful student. She loved to write, spend time with her friends, play basketball and loved being a big sister,โ€ said the Colleton County School District in a statement released Thursday. โ€œShe was actively involved in her church as a junior usher. She will be missed greatly by her family, friends, and the entire school community.โ€

The Sheriffโ€™s Office told CNN that no weapons were involved in the incident.

โ€œShe should be alive. She shouldnโ€™t have died,โ€ said Dwayne Buckner, a Walterboro attorney, who added that the other studentโ€™s punishment would be decided by the County Solicitor.

โ€œHow egregious the act was, whether or not there was a lot of planning beforehand, if they make that decision, they could be tried as an adult,โ€ Buckner added. He also noted that school employees could be held responsible if they deviated from standard procedure laid out by the school.

โ€œWhatever the situation is,โ€ Buckner said, โ€œwe have an obligation to make sure our children go to school in a safe environment, and somehow weโ€™ve failed at that.โ€

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
