The Grammys have long been criticized for getting it wrong when it comes to handing out awards for the best in music. Who could forget the hashtag #GrammysSoWhite in 2017, when artists like Beyoncé and Rihanna were snubbed? Now, it seems the powers that be at The Recording Academy are doing their part to right some of past wrongs.

At long last, rapper Eve is getting her flowers for her contributions to “You Got Me,” a classic single from The Roots’ 1999 album “Things Fall Apart,” which earned the group a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2000. Although she was relatively unknown at the time, Eve delivered what was arguably a standout verse.
However, the Philadelphia native, who was a new artist on the Ruff Ryders label at the time, was not credited on the album. Although she has had plenty of solo success with hits like “Tambourine” and “Who’s That Girl?” Eve said she was in her feelings when she realized her name wouldn’t be included in The Roots’ album credits.
“I felt some type of way,” she said in an interview with Hot 97. “I was like, I can’t believe these dudes really didn’t credit me on this record.”
Now, more than 25 years after the song’s release, Eve finally received her Grammy during a Thursday (Jan. 29) ceremony.
“What is yours never can miss you, even 30 years later,” she said in her acceptance speech.
Fans on social media were happy to see that Eve is finally getting the recognition that she deserves.
“Happy to see this!! She went bar for bar with @blackthought – AND HELD HER OWN!! Most cannot say that. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾,” wrote someone on Instagram.
Other commenters chimed in, making their case for making things right with Jill Scott as well. Although Scott was credited as a co-writer on the track and sang the hook on the original version, her voice was replaced by Erykah Badu’s on the album at the record label’s request.
“Now do the same for @missjillscott @grammys,” wrote someone else.
