The viral video features influencer Pablo Tamayo interacting with Doja Cat. He's seen offering her the shirt he's wearing, embracing her, and celebrating Pride month with her. Doja Cat appears joyful in the clip. And then, this happened...
It seems Doja was not too pleased with that interaction, however, as she took to social media to address the moment.
"I threw that musty ass shirt away btw," she wrote in a now-deleted post on X, formerly known as Twitter. "bottom line is i’ll smile at you but it doesn’t mean I f-ck w you and don’t touch me and man handle me when you don’t even f-ckin know me. iykyk."
She added that she thinks she needs to "stand up" for herself in the moment, adding, "and he didn’t even know my f-ckin name to be touching me and kissing me on my face like that is crazy."
While both posts are now deleted from X, Tamayo defintley saw them, as he posted another TikTok, this time addressing Doja's comments. "I understand guys if I was being too nice or whatever I will take full accountability," he said in the video. "I’m gay; I would never want to make her feel uncomfortable. She’s so iconic."
Naturally, the internet is split on the issue, with some taking issue with Doja's response, while others feel she was justified. TikTok user @rihnely said in a post that Doja should've "said how she felt and not dragged it to social media."
She added, "Everyone is entitled to not be touched if that's what they want, but she was not being true to her fan. She could've declined the shirt, gave him a side hug or no hug, and walked away ... why are you matching someone's energy like that?"
Another TikTok user, @thezetaylor, had a more nuanced approach, saying that Doja Cat was "rude" in the interaction and that she should've had security on her, but that it should be a "learning experience" for the fan. "This is how most celebrities think and behave."
On X, some users think it speaks to a bigger issue for Doja, where she has made it clear multiple times she doesn't particularly care for her fans. "The moral of the story is leave doja cat alone she dosnt like yall," one user wrote. "Personally I would have asked before hugging her but I just genuinely think she’s not a people person and dosnt like her fans and even if he had not hugged her and just spoke to her it would have been a issue."
Other users seem to be completely on her side, with one person writing, "I’m not afraid to say it. Doja Cat is 100% in the right about the t shirt fan thing."
Either way, it seems once again Doja is in an interesting place with her fandom. While she certainly doesn't seem to be going anywhere, it does make one wonder if she is setting a new standard of boundaries for these pop stars, or if she genuinely is over the fans that have supported her all these years.
