Denzel Washington has never been the one to flaunt his acting achievements because he just lets the work speak for itself. And in a recent interview, the two-time Oscar Award-winner just got real about what he really thinks about Academy Awards, and it may not be what you think.

In a recent “Jake’s Takes” interview about his latest film “Highest 2 Lowest,” Washington made it clear that awards don’t guide his career choices. “I don’t do it for Oscars. I don’t care about that kind of stuff,” he said. “I’ve been at this a long time, and there’s times when I won and shouldn’t have won and then didn’t win and should’ve won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward. I’m not interested in Oscars.”
In other words, chasing awards? Not his thing.
He added, “People ask me, ‘Where do I keep it?’ Well, next to the other one. I’m not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, it ain’t gonna do me a bit of good.”
Still, Washington has earned Oscars for “Glory”(1990) and “Training Day (2002)” and has been nominated for several other standout performances, including “Cry Freedom,” “Malcolm X,” “The Hurricane,” “Flight,” “Fences,” “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”
Earlier this year, despite his acclaimed performance in ‘Gladiator II,’ the prominent actor was notably snubbed for an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in the film. Speaking with The New York Times, he shared his thoughts about the snub. “Are you kidding me? Aww. Oh, I’m so upset. I’m happy for all that did, and I’m happy with what I’m doing.”
Currently, Washington is promoting “Highest 2 Lowest,” directed by Spike Lee. The film opens in select theaters on August 15 via A24 and Apple Studios and will stream on Apple TV+ starting September 5th.
