On Friday, DDG celebrated his 28th birthday by releasing his fifth studio album, “Moo,” along with a music video for the fourth track on the album, “17 more years.” It’s a song that references his custody battle with his ex-girlfriend, Halle Bailey, over their 1-year-old son, Halo, and it’s this song that has landed on Black Twitter’s radar.

As we’ve previously reported, between May and June, DDG and Halle Bailey were going back and forth in court, due to Bailey’s allegations of physical and verbal abuse. This led to a judge granting Bailey a restraining order of 100 yards against DDG and allowing her to have custody of their son. At the same time, DDG was prohibited from posting about his son or Bailey on social media.

Now, while DDG has not technically posted about his son, he has brought the conversation back online with the release of his song “17 more years.”

In the song, he raps that say he doesn’t want to fight with Bailey, and he thinks it is in their best interest to get along while their son grows up for the next 17 years.

“I don’t want to fight no more. / Tired of the court dates. / Lawyers gettin’ over us, watching money go to waste. / We should all get together on his birthday and light the cake. / If we talk, it’ll get better. / Go ahead and drop the case.”

Black folks on Twitter have shared mixed responses to the tune, and some users feel it is a genuine effort from DDG to make up with Bailey.

“That’s really emotional. Sounds like he’s trying to reach out and make peace for their son’s sake,” wrote one user.

“He said she’s a ‘good mom.’ That line hit different. Shows he still has respect for,” added another.

However, others are asking, “Why are we in the group chat?” And feel that DDG should not have brought this drama back to social media again.

“DDG brought this to social media, his fans dragged her, escalated to court… and now he’s back saying she’s a good mom,” wrote one user with a facepalm emoji.

“He should send a text next time,” wrote another.

“Can’t tell me this ain’t narcissism in full form,” added another.

Others feel that the timing of the release is odd, considering Bailey recently started teasing a new album on social media.

“Notice how he dropped this when teasers of Halle’s new album started popping up,” added another.

One user added that the custody battle is a sad situation for the rapper, but DDG needs to show more growth to fix it.

“It’s heartbreaking all around, but public declarations mean little when private actions tell another story. Growth begins where ego ends.”
