Chicago, NYC Mayors Brandon Johnson, Zohran Mamdani Slam ICE Following Shooting Death

After Renee Good was shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis Wednesday, Mayor Brandon Johnson and Mayor Zohran Mamdani is drawing a line in the sand.

Just four blocks from where a Minneapolis police officer knelt on George Floyd’s neck in 2020, a mother was gunned down in broad daylight on Wednesday (Jan. 7), this time at the hands of a masked ICE agent. While Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey told the feds to “get the f**k out” of his city, the echo of his outrage is already vibrating through the halls of power in Chicago and New York. Mayors Brandon Johnson and Zohran Mamdani are breaking their silence on the shooting and drawing a line in the sand.

The Root previously reported a woman, identified as Renee Nicole Good, was fatally shot by an ICE officer. ICE declared their agent acted out of self defense, claiming “one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them— an act of domestic terrorism,” a statement from the agency read.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the incident in a video on X. “The video that many of us have seen of ICE officers fatally shooting a woman at point blank range is deeply disturbing and unfortunately, all too similar to incidents that have transpired in Chicago.”

He added: “No community deserves to be subjected to the terror that’s stemming from this president’s use of ICE as his personal militarized force.”

But Johnson didn’t stop at declaring Good’s innocence; he took aim at the institution that cut her life short.

In blistering follow-up tweets, Johnson demanded a complete federal retreat, insisting that the only way to protect Black and Brown lives is to get “ICE out of our communities now.” Standing in a unified front with a grieving Minneapolis, Johnson characterized ICE as “Trump’s lawless, racist force.”

Mayor Johnson isn’t the only leader condemning the actions of ICE. New York City’s newly minted Mayor Zohran Mamdani (who took office just one week ago) called the shooting “horrific.” He continued: “This is one part of what has been a year full of cruelty. And we know when ICE agents attack immigrants they attack every single one of us across this country.”

Mamdani wasted no time making it clear that the era of the NYPD playing wingman to ICE is officially over. “We are going to uphold our city sanctuary policies. We are going to adhere to them.”

President Donald Trump repeated his claims that the ICE agent who fatally shot Good acted in self-defense. “She behaved horribly,” Trump told the New York Times when he was asked how he decided that Good attempted to run over the immigration agent who shot her. “And then she ran him over. She didn’t try to run him over. She ran him over.”
