Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom is Not Playing With Trump Amid Looming SNAP Benefits Suspension

Newsom and 20+ states sue Trump over halted SNAP benefits, calling the move ‘intentional cruelty’ that puts millions at risk of hunger.

As per usual, California Governor Gavin Newsom isn’t holding back when it comes to President Donald Trump and his latest power move. Alongside Attorney General Rob Bonta, the Democratic leaders are taking the administration to court for its refusal to release federal funds that would keep SNAP benefits flowing during the government shutdown. And according to Newsom, this careless move puts millions of Americans at risk of hunger.

The lawsuit, backed by more than twenty states, per Fox 40, accuses Trump’s team of unlawfully blocking billions meant to feed Americans who rely on SNAP benefits every month. Despite the government shutdown reaching day 28, funds meant to support SNAP have not been impacted — yet the United States Department of Agriculture, under President Trump’s direction, is unnecessarily suspending November benefits, per the news outlet.

Newsom dubbed the move “intentional cruelty” during a press conference posted to his Twitter Tuesday, solely meant to create anxiety for folks in his home state.

“Maybe they got an edited version of Donald Trump’s bible, and they edited all of that out,” Newsom teased of the administration’s recklessness, despite attending prayer breakfasts. “That’s what this is about, it’s intentional cruelty. Intentionally creating anxiety for millions and millions of people — 5 million here in our home state.”

The comment section was messy, but split between fiery opinions. While many sided with the governor, others seized the moment to vent about Newsom, specifically harping on his tactics in leading California… and the tea was piping hot.

“Trump loves to hurt people he does not like (blue states) even if it hurts his own supporters in the process,” one fan wrote, while another darted: “The citizens of California should sue you!”

According to Newsom’s office, the Golden State is set to step up to protect families from hunger, directly providing a reported $80 million in state funds to help stabilize food bank distribution. The California National Guard, and volunteers, are reportedly mobilized plan, pack, and deliver meals during this time of need.
