The former “TODAY Show” co-host was removed from his Manhattan apartment on a gurney sometime around 9 pm on Monday (Oct. 20) due to an undisclosed “medical emergency,” according to TMZ.
Although no information has been released about what Gumbel is being treated for, family members– who confirmed he was still being treated as of Oct. 21– told TMZ that the 77-year-old is “okay.”
Bryant Gumbel sat at the anchor desk of NBC’s “The TODAY Show” from 1982 to 1997 and hosted HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” from 1995 to 2023. In 2009, he revealed his battle with lung cancer– including surgery on one of his lungs– which he said was the result of smoking three packs of cigarettes a day for ten years.
“They opened up my chest, they took a malignant tumor, and they took part of my lung, and they took some other goodies,” he said during a December 2009 stint as guest cohost on “Live With Regis and Kelly.” He added, at the time: “And the pathology on most of the stuff had been benign, but enough aggressive cells had escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment, and I went through that, and it’s done now.”
The Gumbel family suffered a tragic loss in 2024, when Bryant’s older brother, sportscaster Greg Gumbel, died after his cancer diagnosis. He was 78.
Now, as the public waits for more information on his condition, they are sending their love to Gumbel and the family online. Actress Holly Robinson Peete and model Tyson Beckford are just some of the stars who posted well wishes on Instagram.
“Praying for Bryant Gumbel,” wrote former “Sunday Night Football” reporter Michele Tafoya on X.
We will continue to follow updates on Gumbel’s condition.
