The dispute that resulted in Joshua Beal’s death started over whether a funeral caravan was blocking a fire lane. Apparently, seconds after the shooting, Michael Beal tackled an off-duty officer, put him in a headlock and threatened to kill him.

According to CBS News, there were confrontations between protesters and police supporters multiple times in a predominantly white neighborhood on Chicago’s Southwest Side.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called for peaceful protests; during one of the confrontations, police supporters used slurs such as, “You are animals, go home,” at demonstrators.
