Breakout Stars Secure 1st-Ever Win at 2024 Golden Globes

The 81st annual awards went down without a hitch on Sunday.

On Sunday, the 2024 Golden Globes took place, live from the Beverly Hilton.

While the β€œrevamped” award show still only saw a handful of BIPOC wins throughout the night, two Black breakout stars walked away as winners that night: Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Ayo Edibiri.

Securing her first-ever Golden Globe win for her role as Mary in β€œThe Holdovers,” Da’Vine took home the award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture. During her speech, she thanked her co-stars and folks who played a role in getting her to where she was. She also expressed how grateful she was for the role she played and hoped it inspired everyone else to find their β€œinner Mary.”

For her first-ever Golden Globe win speech, Ayo hilariously thanked her β€œfamily”—both on β€œThe Bear” and her real family. She also took the time out to thank her manager and agent’s assistant who answered all her emails. Her win came shortly after her fellow co-star Jeremy White took home the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Both actresses have been having a breakout year for their respective roles, racking up awards early on in this year’s awards season. With her win, Da’Vine took home the award over Color Purple’s Danielle Brooks who has also been slowly rising as a front runner in the Supporting Actress categories. Ayo also took home the win in her category over fellow nominee Quinta Brunson.

Other Black nominees of the night include Fantasia Barrino, β€œSpider-Man: Across the Spider-verse,” Colman Domingo, Jeffrey Wright, β€œAmerican Fiction,” Lenny Kravitz and more. Here’s hoping that the night produces a bit more melanated wins.
