This Memorial Day weekend, we are firing up the grill and kicking back to enjoying our Mama’s food as we indulge in our favorite tv shows and films. From classic war movies to our family show favorites, let’s gather together and commemorate a well-deserved long weekend.

A Solider’s Story (1984)

Nothing speaks Black excellence more than seeing our Black legendary actors in supporting roles. “A Soldier’s Story” stars Denzel Washington and David Alan Grier in murder mystery set on a segregated Army base during World War II, where a Black officer investigates the death of a fellow Black sergeant. As the investigation develops, the film explore themes of racism, identity, and prejudice within the military, making it a compelling and thought-provoking classic film.

Glory (1990)

Starring Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington, “Glory” tells the true story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first Black units to fight for the Union in the Civil War. Another classic portrayal of racism, hardship and courage in battle.

Hidden Figures

“Hidden Figures” is a pure gem with beautiful leading ladies Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae giving viewers an emotional yet powerful portrayal of Black women working in space. The film received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance.

Red Tails

You can not speak about a strong black leading cast without mentioning “Red Tails.” Starring Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Terrance Howard, the powerhouse lineup dominated in the film as they highlighted racism that the Tuskegee Airmen endured within the military and society.

Harriet

Cynthia Erivo delivered a powerful performance in her role as “Harriet.” The film captured the phenomenal impact of Tubman’s bravery as she escaped slavery and her fearless work in becoming America’s first freedom fighters.

Underground

If you thought Harriet was good, you will definitely enjoy the hit television show, “Underground.” Starring Jurnee Smollet-Bell and Aldis Hodge, the series explores the journey of slaves making their journey north via the Underground Railroad. The show did a great job incorporating historical figures and events that captures a mind-blowing portrayal of the south.

The Six Triple Eight

Tyler Perry deserves his flowers for the powerful execution of the Netflix film, “The Six Triple Eight,” starring Kerry Washington. The film tells the amazing true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion — the only all Black, all female unit deployed overseas during World War II. Despite facing racism and sexism, these brave women accomplished a monumental task to support U.S. troops.

Abbott Elementary

While school is out, it’s the perfect time to catch up on the hilarious episodes of “Abbott Elementary.” The Emmy-winning series follows a group of dedicated teachers as they navigate the everyday challenges of working at a underfunded school while pushing through comical moments inside and outside the classroom.

Major Payne

If you’re in need of a good laugh, Damon Wayans in “Major Payne” is going to deliver. The classic 1990’s comedy follows a former Marine turned JROTC instructor who gets a group of misfits into shape. The classic comedic lines will have you in tears.

She The People

Giving a hilarious spin to politics and drama, Terri J. Vaughn as Antoinette Dunkerson portrays the first Black lieutenant governor of Mississippi. The show follows Dunkerson as she faces challenges of her new political role while managing the chaos of her own family being in the public eye.

G20

The action packed movie, streaming on Prime Video, stars Viola Davis as the U.S. President who takes you on a nonstop ride of political tension as she is forced to fight for her life — and the world — during an unforeseen crisis. “G20″ is a definite must watch.

All American

The CW hit series “All American” is one of the best shows to binge on a long weekend. The sports television drama follows Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), who was recruited to play football at Beverly Hills High while navigating two contrasting worlds. The show offers a nuanced portrayal of the Black youth experience and the complexities of socioeconomic challenges. The storytelling and performance is like no other teenage focused show on air.

The Proud Family
