The Woman King starring Viola Davis, a film about the all-female warriors called the Agojie of Dahomey, won Best Picture at the 2023 African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards.

Director Gina Prince Bythewood of Best Picture, The Woman King, won the award for Best Picture at the AAFCA Awards. Bythewood has also been a writer for Love & Basketball, A Different World, and a screenplay for The Secret Life of Bees.

Jeremy Pope won the award for Best Actor as Ellis French in The Inspection. The Inspection is about a Black, gay man who joins the Marines after being rejected by his mother.

Danielle Deadwyler won the award for Best Actress as Emmett Till’s mother, Mamie-Mobley in the film, Till.
