The North Carolina Democrats and Republicans have seemed to put their differences aside to unite and agree on one thing this week: for one representative to resign from his seat after he was arrested and charged for a heinous sex crime against a minor.

In 2023, Raymon Holmberg, a now-former North Dakota State senator was charged for traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor, the Department of Justice reported, and five years prior, Oklahoma Rep. Ralph Allen Lee Shorey was sentenced to 15 years in prison for soliciting a minor to engage in a commercial sex act.
The news of Cecil Brockman’s, a 41-year-old Black representative elected in 2014, arrest broke on Thursday (Oct. 9). And it seems to be nothing but chaos in the House ever since. He was formally charged the day before on two counts of indecent liberties with a child and two counts of statutory rape of a child aged 13-15, the Associated Press reported.
A Guilford County magistrate’s order claims the six-term Democrat allegedly engaged in a sexual act with a 15-year-old. And on two separate occasions, he allegedly committed or attempted to commit “a lewd and lascivious act” upon the juvenile.
But that’s only the beginning of the disturbing allegations against him.
That same order accuses Brockman of trying to “use his status” as a politician to learn about the teenager’s whereabouts while the victim was in the hospital.
Now, elected leaders want Brockman to resign… stat. North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein called Brockman’s charges “extremely serious and deeply troubling,” but noted that, “While the legal process has yet to play out, it’s clear he cannot effectively serve his constituents and should resign immediately.”
House Minority Leader Robert Reives said that it has “become clear that he is unable to continue serving in the House of Representatives.”
Even the Republicans shared their two cents. House Speaker Destin Hall called Brockman’s charges “shocking and extremely serious” and that he should “resign immediately so these charges do not distract from the work of the North Carolina House.”
Brockman is being held without bond at the High Point Detention Center. If convicted, he faces a minimum of 12 years in prison.
