A mom who attended a back-to-school event in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday was hit with criminal charges after her attempt to stop a school fight left kids and parents running for their lives.

Cherez Davis, 34, was at the crowded Back-to-School Health Fair at the C.W. Williams Community Health Center, which offered low-cost physicals for students, free school supplies and book bags. Davis told authorities that her son and another boy started to argue during the event and another adult “got involved,” PEOPLE reported.
The argument quickly escalated, and court records noted that Davis admitted to reaching into her backpack and pulling out a Taurus G6 handgun and fired “two shots into the air to try to break up the fight.” The affidavit alleged that Davis “put her firearm back into the backpack and started walking away.” Chaos ensued after shots rang out, sending over 100 people, including school-aged children, fleeing for their safety.
Debra Weeks, CEO of the health center, told the Charlotte Observer how the terrified attendees ran out into oncoming traffic on the busy main road adjacent to the fair and responding police officers were mistaken for ICE agents conducting a raid.
“They gave her the mic. She had to say she’s no longer welcome on the property … and all she could say was, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry,’” Weeks told the outlet. No injuries were reported.
According to WBTV, the shooter was described as a woman with braids, a black shirt, jeans, and Crocs, per witnesses, which matched Davis’ person. Police quickly found Davis and arrested her that same day. Davis has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and going armed to the terror of the people. The handgun Davis used was retrieved and collected as evidence. The 34-year-old was released on a $50,000 bond, per jail records. Davis is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 9.
