Thankfully, Thompson survived after landing in bushes and mulch on the ground below, but he spent months in a cast after the fall left him with a broken leg, torn ligaments in his neck, bruised lungs, and a laceration to his liver. Today, the toddler gets around with the help of a wheelchair and a walker.

“His age and size and weight is really what helped, because if he had been any heavier, he may not have survived,” Montgomery County police spokesperson Shiera Goff told ABC News at the time of his fall.

Now, Thompson is starting the road to recovery, which will include physical therapy and visits with specialists as he learns to walk and is potty-trained again. The family has started a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of his healing journey. To date, they have raised more than half of their initial $4,000 goal.

“By what can only be described as a miracle, he survived — but his road to recovery will be long, painful, and expensive,” the family wrote on the page. “We as his grandparents are doing everything we can, but this journey will require support from a loving, generous community.”

Although Thompson’s grandmother, Janiel Thompson, told WUSA 9 that he still has some nightmares about the fall, the family knows that the outcome could have been much worse. That’s why celebrating his third birthday this year is going to be more meaningful than ever. And the toddler has a very special gift request on his list.

“I want a bulldozer, please,” he told WUSA 9.
