If you haven’t already seen the viral videos online, a Pit Ball mauled a one-year-old boy with a bite so strong that it left a hole in the child’s leg. The two-year-old Pit Bull, named Disco Bubba, lunged at the baby after his legs swung in front of the canine’s mouth as his dad picked him up, according to The New York Post.
In the clips, pedestrians attempt to yank the canine away from the baby while the boy’s distressed mom shouts for someone to call the police. Eventually, Richardson manages to get the dog in a headlock, forcing it to release its bite, and allowing the owner to pull it away from the situation.
Per The New York Post, the baby boy was left with multiple cuts in his leg and taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was treated. The owner is not facing any charges from the police, but the baby’s family is looking for a way to get Bubba euthanized, according to reports.
On YouTube, Kevin Richardson, a Black man, gave his side of the story, telling his viewers that he jumped to help after noticing a commotion in Union Square.
“Walking down towards Forbidden Planet (popular comic book store) in front of us (Richardson and his son), there was a huge commotion. Initially, I could hear people screaming, couldn’t figure out who was screaming or what was going on, but I could also hear a child screaming,” he said.
When he heard the baby crying, Richardson rushed forward to see if there was anything he could do to help, and that’s when he saw the pit bull clamped onto the child’s leg. Having seen pit bull attacks before, Richardson immediately knew what to do, unlike other well-meaning pedestrians who were aggravating the dog more by hitting it and throwing water at it.
“I’ve, unfortunately, been in situations where I’ve seen Pit Bulls attack before, and I know that the more you aggravate it, it’s only going to keep on biting down, probably even harder.”
Continuing, he added that he saw the pit bull’s airways were available to him and wrapped it in a headlock: “So, I wrapped it into choke position, bicep to one artery and pressing on the other artery and squeezed as hard as I could. It felt like I was holding onto a muscle; the dog was completely rigid and completely clamped down.”
Although it seemed hopeless, Richardson did not give up.
“It started getting to a point where it felt like it might not work, maybe I don’t have enough strength to choke this dog out because it’s just so much muscle. As I started to think to myself, if this doesn’t work, I’ll have to put the dog down, thankfully, the dog started to go limp.”
In his video, Richardson stressed that he did not want to kill the dog and let it go after the dog released its bite to stop it from passing out completely. After moving away from the pit bull, Richardson went to calm the distressed parents before checking on his son and left with him to go to Forbidden Planet.
In the YouTube comments, viewers have been thanking Richardson for helping and are calling him a hero.
“Kevin, you are a hero. Thank you for saving his life,” wrote one user.
“That kid was so lucky to have you walk that lane at that same time, God is great!!! You are a great Hero,” added another.
“Thank God for you, brother. The Lord placed you there at that moment to save that innocent child. May the Lord continue to bless you,” posted another.
