Fitness and motivational influencer LBG Fitness took to TikTok to talk about a video of his daughter that was posted on the social media platform. “So I just saw this video circulating of my daughter having a mental crisis. She was naked in the street, vulnerable and suffering,” he begins. “My daughter is dealing with postpartum, manic depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia conditions that require care, not cruelty.”

The creator then calls out the unnamed person who shared the video for not raising awareness but sharing humiliation. “That video was not entertainment. What it was was a moment when a person was having a psychiatric decompensation. See, what she really needed was a healthcare facility. Not a video.”

As the fitness coach stresses in the video, “Mental illness is not a joke and it is not clickbait… When we treat it as a spectacle, we don’t only fail as individuals, we fail as a society. So if you saw that video and it made you feel uncomfortable, then good. Let that discomfort move you to compassion. Let it remind you to support and not shame.”

Let’s do better for her and for everyone who’s ever struggled with mental health. For the dignity we all deserve. #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthawareness #itsnitok

The description of the posted video, which was not linked in the influencer’s post, was enough to have viewers sharing their admiration for the dad sticking up for his daughter in the comments:

“I will never understand someone picking up their phone to record rather than calling someone to help,” wrote one viewer.

“People fail to realize that all it takes is one traumatic event and they can go into psychosis themselves. Sorry that happened to your baby,” added another.

“Shame, shame, shame, we should do better for our homeless and mentally ill. God bless you for bringing attention and sharing your story,” typed another.

Issues with mental health are something that is commonly stigmatised, with only 25% of Black Americans asking for help when they need it, compared to 40% of White Americans, according to McLean Hospital, a leading psychiatric hospital. Therefore, like the father said, it is important to treat those dealing with mental health issues with the compassion they deserve and help get them the health care they need.
