Another day, another reason for Tyler Perry to get raked over the coals on social media, it seems. But this time around, another famed film giant–namely Ryan Coogler--is getting roped into all the chatter. Don’t worry, we’ll explain.

In a now-viral clip floating around the internet from one of the latest episodes of Kirk Franklin’s new series, “Den of Kings,” Perry alongside Franklin, rapper Jeezy and entrepreneur Derrick Hayes were all discussing the power of ownership within the Black community. It was then that Perry surprisingly revealed that he was the brains behind Coogler’s iconic film deal with Warner Bros. If you’ll remember, in April, it was revealed that Coogler would get the rights back to his box office hit film “Sinners,” after 25 years–a deal that only a few prominent filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese have solidified in the history of the industry.
Nevertheless, Perry decided to share how he allegedly played a role in the impressive deal.
“When this deal with Ryan Coogler, everybody’s talking about this ‘Sinners’ deal, ‘Oh my gosh, he got this amazing deal!’ Listen, I called that brother–as I did a lot of them– I called him up after ‘Black Panther’ and I said ‘here’s how you do it,’” he said.
Perry continued: “The deal that he has, my first movie, it’ll be 20 years this year for ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman.’ I called him up and said here is how you do that deal. And to see that they were able to pull it off, I applaud him man. I’m excited for him because that’s what it’s about: holding onto the ownership.”
However, while Perry’s overall message was positive, many online took issue with his anecdote about Coogler, expressing that it felt more pointed, shady, and jealous more than anything. Some users also felt that it was something the “Black Panther” director himself should’ve publicized first instead of Perry.
“This is exactly why I think Tyler Perry is corny. you haven’t congratulated Ryan publicly or celebrated his wins (and you weren’t thanked by him) but wanna claim you ‘helped him’ by giving him advice that he even admitted, he got from Christopher Nolan. just a big ass loser,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.
“Tyler Perry definitely thinks he’s the smartest Black person in the room at all times, so of course he would try to give himself credit for Ryan Coogler’s deal with Warner Bros…when he had nothing to do with it,” said another.
One other user noted: “Two different types of people the Denzel who sponsors Chadwick to go to school without saying a word and a Tyler Perry that sees Ryan Coogler being celebrated and immediately lets you know that I coached him and gave him the playbook. I been did that lol.”
Added one other user: “unpopular opinion: there’s an unspoken rule of thumb where you shouldn’t really share the unseen details of your experience with someone unless they tell it themselves first. feel like that applies here. I understand the intention behind it and it being a good example for the industry, but it should’ve been told from the other POV.”
Was Perry wrong for bringing it up or should Coogler have taken the time out to acknowledge his contributions publicly?
