Sha’Carri Richardson is breaking her silence and speaking out following the shocking scuffle she was in with her boyfriend. But judging by some of the reactions on social media, it doesn’t look like folks are really picking up what she’s putting down.

As we told you recently, the Olympic winning track star made headlines earlier in the week after it was revealed she was involved in a slight altercation with her boyfriend, Christian Coleman, at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. Per the arresting officer, he saw Richardson “shove Coleman multiple times” as he tried to walk away from her and allegedly “fell into a nearby column.” Richardson also allegedly “threw a pair of headphones” at him.
As a result, the athlete was arrested and charged with “fourth-degree domestic violence assault.” Coleman–who had been dating Richardson for the past two years–declined to press charges or to be a “victim,” so the case has been cleared.
However, video footage of the ordeal later leaked online with the imagery showing exactly what the arresting officers had witnessed. And on Wednesday, even more footage of the incident landed on the internet, specifically the moment that Richardson was being handcuffed. In the footage, she can also be heard questioning why she was being arrested and not Coleman.
“I can definitely provide footage of him assaulting me if possible,” she said at one point. In another moment, Richardson said she was planning on pressing charges against him and expressed disbelief in the fact that she was getting arrested even though Coleman was the “man in the situation.”
Richardson later posted an apology video saying that she’s been doing some reflection and that she wanted to be her “best self.” She went on to say that she appreciated her fans, family and friends for holding her accountable and said that she wouldn’t be running away from this. Instead she hopes to get on the other side of the whole ordeal.
She later added in a since-expired post to her Instagram stories: “I apologize to Christian. He came into my life and gave me more than a relationship but a greater understanding of unconditional love from what I’ve experienced in my past. Due to my past trauma and pain, I was blocked off to not only receive it but to give it. I love him and to him I can’t apologize enough. My apologize should be just as loud as my actions honestly louder. To Christian I love you and I am so sorry.[sic]”
In spite of all this though, once footage of Richardson’s arrest hit the social media streets, many weren’t too quick to buy into her apology and called her out for it.
“Would a man get away with smiling during an apology video for assaulting his girlfriend? No, he would be dragged, and no one would believe the apology,” one user wrote on X/Twitter. “Sha’Carri Richardson smiled repeatedly while apologizing for assaulting her boyfriend, and I believe she will do it again. We have to hold women accountable the same way we would a man. To me, the video didn’t seem sincere. He needs to leave her, or he risks being jailed next time.”
“That Shacarri Richardson shit is so scary because you can really have a partner that tries to flip everything on you like she wasn’t just abusive af. She said ‘Why are you arresting me and he’s the man in the situation?’ Bro wtf? You were ON CAMERA abusing this mf,” wrote one user.
“And that ShaCarri Richardson body cam footage pissed me off so damn bad. Her ass ain’t take no accountability. Whole time her bf was tryna cover for her and the btch just kept trying to get him jammed up AFTER SHE GOT CAUGHT beating him,” said another.
According to another social media user, Sha’Carri Richardson and Joey Swoll’s apologies were “the same.” They added, “Both didn’t sincerely mean it and will absolutely do it again lmaooo.”
Added one other user: “First of all, Sha’Carri’s bf is such a good, decent guy. She doesn’t deserve him. I just saw the airport video and she’s crazy. She really beat him up, he never returned blows and then refused to press charges, trying to save both their sprinting careers.”
