Officials say Trevor Lee got into a domestic dispute the day before the unthinkable happened at a home on Silver Point and County Road 220. Investigators believe Lee used a gun that belonged to his parents, David Lee, 44, and Brandi Smith, 45, to shoot them both dead. According to 11Alive, after the shooting, Lee turned himself in at a nearby church where Clay County deputies took him into custody after he called 911. He surrendered without resistance. Authorities found his parents dead from gunshot wounds in their bedroom. The gun was also left at the scene, per reports.
Now, the teenager has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder. His mugshot and arrest report was released on Tuesday (August 5) by Clay County deputies, with audio from his 911 call. Lee is heard telling the 911 operator how he threw his backpack away from him, was waiting for cops in the “middle” of a church and telling them how he needed to pray. He then asks the 911 operator to pray for him, to which they obliged, telling him, “I will definitely be praying for you, son,” in response. They were on the call together for the next 10 minutes.
Authorities are now reviewing Lee’s school and mental health history as part of their ongoing investigation.
“We do want to extend our deepest sympathies to the family, the friends, and all of those who are affected by this heartbreaking incident,” Sheriff Michelle Cook said. “We would like to ask anyone in the community that may have some information on Trevor Lee or his parents to please reach out to us.” The sheriff also noted their is no current threat to the community.
