Here are our picks when it comes to the big contenders for awards season so far:
Sinners
How could we start with anything else? Ryan Coogler’s epic vampire film took moviegoers by storm this year, becoming the first true must-see cinematic experience. The box office was incredibly impressive, and we suspect various awards bodies (including the Oscars) will want to show “Sinners” and Coogler plenty of love this upcoming season.
Highest 2 Lowest
Spike Lee and Denzel are at it again. The legendary filmmaker teamed up with the iconic actor for “Highest 2 Lowest.” While the film was released theatrically to small fanfare, it still earned rave reviews from critics, and is set to stream on Apple this week. We predict that this may be one to watch as nominations are announced this fall.
Abbott Elementary
Abbott Elementary is the gift that keeps on giving. ABC’s hit sitcom from Quinta Brunson is fresh off another acclaimed season, and just scored five Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and acting nominations for Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Janelle James.
One of Them Days
While this film is not necessarily what the Oscars would go far (comedies historically have a hard time competing), “One of Them Days” feels like a perfect Golden Globe selection. Both Keke Palmer and SZA shine in the film, which feels like it has a genuine shot at the Globes’ Best Motion Picture – Muscial or Comedy category.
F1
If “Top Gun: Maverick” made it all the way to the Academy Awards, why not “F1”? One of the biggest films of the year, the sports drama film starred Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, and could very well see both of them getting some nominations soon.
Dope Thief
Dope Thief, the Apple TV+ crime drama, has earned rave reviews on the streamer. Brian Tyree Henry’s performance in particular really has impressed critics, and has already earned him an Emmy nomination.
The Bear
One again, “The Bear” has earned multiple nominations ahead of this year’s Emmys. Breakout star Ayo Edebiri not only snagged a performance nomination this year, but she also got a nod for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
One Battle After Another
More than almost any film coming out this fall, we’ve got our eyes on “One Battle After Another.” The Paul Thomas Anderson film starring Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and more seems to be one of the most exciting films to premiere this year. Anderson’s films tend to become awards contendors, and we predict this will be no exception.
Wicked: For Good
“Wicked” is back with an official second installment. Premiering in just a few months, the film will continue to tell the story of the Wicked Witch of the West (played by Cynthia Erivo) before Dorothy came to Oz. The first film earned multiple Oscar nominations, and we expect the second to nab some as well. Perhaps Cynthia may even win?
Paradise
One of the biggest breakout shows on streaming this year by far was Hulu’s Paradise. Led by Sterling K. Brown, the political thriller series captured audience’s imaginations, and has already earned Sterling an Emmy nomination.
