You might think the only thing “Seinfeld” and the movie “Malcolm X” have in common is that they both came out in the early 1990s. The sitcom that was all about nothing was whiter than white in comparison to the biographical drama based on the life of the legendary civil rights leader. But in a recent interview with Vogue, award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter shared a surprising connection between the Emmy award-winning sitcom and the film that earned Denzel Washington an Oscar nomination.

Carter, who designed the costumes for “Seinfeld’s” pilot episode, said that while coming up with the looks for each character, Jason Alexander, the actor who played Jerry Seinfeld’s hilariously neurotic friend George Costanza, had a specific request.
“[He came] into his fitting and saying, ‘I like to wear glasses. I’d like to have some wire-rimmed glasses,” Carter said.
Carter, whose impressive resume includes Oscar wins for her work on both “Black Panther” and the sequel “Black Panther” Wakanda Forever,” had just finished work on the costumes for the Spike Lee film “Malcolm X.” She said she held on to some of the props from the film, including a pair of wire-rimmed glasses actor Denzel Washington wore while playing the title character.
When she gave Alexander the glasses to try on, Carter says he was feeling them immediately.
“He said, ‘Yeah, I like this. This is it,’” she said.
The clip got plenty of comments from viewers who were surprised at the connection.
“Can’t make this up! Genius,” wrote one TikToker in the comments.
Another Seinfeld fan showed their appreciation for the unexpected Easter egg.
“Ruth E Carter dropping knowledge on Seinfeld nerds like me!” wrote someone else.
Another commenter hilariously pointed out that those glasses were probably the closest Denzel Washington would ever get to an episode of “Seinfeld.”
“Those glasses are the most diversity on Seinfeld,” they wrote.
