Gospel music legend Yolanda Adams has long been known for her progressive sound in the industry. But the latest thing she’s shared has once again ruffled feathers in the faith community and when you hear it, you’ll understand why!

The “Open My Heart” singer recently sat down for a chat with The Faith Community Virtual, an online hub that seeks to “challenge harmful religious norms while creating a safe, affirming space for spiritual seekers of all kinds.” During their discussion, Adams talked about the limiting ways in which believers perceive God, specifically when it comes to gender. Then, in a surprising move, she suggests that “the Man upstairs” may not be a man after all and implored people to be more expansive in how they think of their Creator.
“I don’t think that God is this small entity that people are trying to make Him or her or it–because he is spirit. Because we are of the mind of calling things gender-wise, because that’s how we grew up…we say ‘He,’” Adams explained. “If He was gonna be surprised by you, He wouldn’t have created you. ‘Cause it’s like…how you think God is surprised just ’cause you’re surprised? And if He made all things and if He created all things, God is a God of variety. God is a God of diversity. We wouldn’t have a million genuses of flowers if He were not.”

No, seriously, she really is. Christians and Christianity has long-held the belief that God is male, a.k.a. the “Father” with Jesus being his son and the Holy Spirit being this third, divine, spiritual entity. By suggesting that the Big G-O-D may be a woman after all goes against one of the most fundamental beliefs in the faith.
So as you might imagine, once saved folks got wind of Adams’ comments, they were swift to let her know that she was in the wrong!
“You know, I always think some was off with this woman. God is Spirit but he is also Father,” wrote one user on YouTube.
“Why is she beating around the bush? The Bible declares that God is HE! He’s the I AM. HE’S EVERYTHING! BUT HIS CHARACTER IS A FATHER TO ALL!” another user on TikTok said.
Added one other person: “People believe everything! But what the Bible said! You will find nothing she’s saying biblical. God Never said he came to make the world a better or to send peace . But to actually separates the Wicked from the righteous.”
Over on Threads, another user asserted: “Jesus came as a MAN and because HE is part of the God head and was the only HUMAN with gender,we refer to Him (3 in one) as He. It’s really simple.”
However, some of the more forward thinking saints defended Adams, arguing that God should be looked at as an all-encompassing being.
“SPEAKKKKK!!!!!!!! God is everything! Completely genderless & pure energy,” one user wrote on TikTok.
“God is literally everything. love that Christians are starting to speak more openly about this,” said another.
Added one user on YouTube: “My girl Yolanda Adams aka YoYo….has always been that girl and has ALWAYS thought outside tradition and church dogma! She was free from it a longtime ago! That’s why I love her and will always support her!”
