Beyoncé, the King of Music, and her husband Jay-Z blessed the rainbow coalition with their presence at Thursday night’s 30th annual GLAAD Awards.
The delegation of gays that filled the room breathed the air of royalty as the two took the stage to accept their Vanguard Award.
Right before their speech, Shangela, who is, in my eyes, the true winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 3, swarmed the stage with the power of a thousand stans and paid a seven-minute tribute worthy of a queen by the name of Giselle.
When the couple took the stage, both shared the same sentiment of love and compassion.
“I want to honor my mother who received the award last year,” Jay said. “I get to follow in her footsteps of spreading love.”
Jigga spoke about his mother’s coming out story and how her journey gave him the compassion to speak passionately about the LGTBQ+ community, while Beyonce shared a story of her uncle who died of complications due to HIV.
“I want to dedicate this award to my Uncle Johnny, the most fabulous gay man who help raised me and my sister,” she said. “He lived his truth and he was brave and unapologetic during a time when this country was not accepting. His battle with HIV was one of the most painful experiences of my life. I’m hopeful that his struggle served to open pathways for other young people to live more freely.”
Bey also gave props to her husband and his well-moisturized hair for making strides against stigmas in the hip-hop industry.
The King of Music continued by saying:
“LGBTQ+ rights are human rights. To choose who you love is your human right. Who you make love to and take that ass to Red Lobster is your human right.”
