Davis and Jeremy Suarez, the actor who played her brother Jordan on the show, both played Bernie Mac’s niece and nephew on all five seasons of the beloved series, which aired from 2001 to 2006.  With sibling rivalry as a core part of their on-screen relationship, we now know that some of their disputes weren’t acting– at all.

During an interview with “The Art of Dialogue,” Davis, now 29 and all grown up, shared some insight none of us saw coming.

During a segment of the interview in which she explored multiple facets of being a child actress, including relationships with costars, Davis responded to a rumor that she and Suarez “didn’t get along on set.”

“No, we hated each other. We literally had beef, like, he was my opp at one point,” Davis said with a smile.

Noting that she didn’t have a brother, she stated that Suarez, who is six years older than her, often picked on her and started the beef that led to their side-by-side dressing rooms being moved further apart.

So, how did the feud begin?

Davis attributes the escalation of their friction to a simple question she asked Suarez when she was four: “Have you seen my mom?” In an amusing imitation of Suarez, Davis recalled how Suarez told her that her mother had gone back to Chicago with her sister and left her behind “because she hates you.”

While she told the story through laughter, she indicated that the issues escalated and spiraled into a beef between their parents. Calling her mother a “firecracker,” Davis explained that her mother got into it with Suarez’s mother and grandmother, leaving Bernie Mac, who died in 2008, to de-escalate tensions.

The show’s fans, now privy to the off-screen tension, quickly drew parallels between Davis and Suarez’s real-life feud and their on-screen sibling rivalry.

One YouTube observer quipped, “Oh, so the episode where Baby Girl slapped the [sh*t] out of Jordan was Dee Dee letting out her frustration.”

Another remarked that, “Jeremy sounded just like Jordan.”

As one Instagram user put it, “So the sibling rivalry on the show was for real, [OMG],” capturing the collective reaction of fans.

But don’t worry. The story doesn’t end there. Davis revealed that, as adults, she and Suarez have found friendship, stating that he’s her “homie” and now they’re “locked in.”
