The announcement was made on the air Tuesday by a jubilant Savannah Guthrie, Kotbโ€™s co-host.

โ€œThis has to be the most popular decision NBC News has ever made,โ€ Guthrie said after making it official.

Kotb responded, โ€œIโ€™m pinching myself. I think we should send some medics to Alexandria, Va., where my mom has likely fainted after hearing the open to that show.โ€

Kotb, who has been with the network since 1998, according to CNN, filled in for longtime host Matt Lauer following his prompt dismissal after allegations of sexual misconduct and assault broke in November.

But Lauerโ€™s departure was a boom for Todayโ€™s ratings. The chemistry between Kotb and Guthrie was palpable. As Kotb told People magazine in an exclusive interview, โ€œWhen you click with someone, man, woman, it doesnโ€™t matter. If it works, it works.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re sort of like sisters,โ€ Kotb said of herself and Guthrie. โ€œAnd everybody wants a sister.โ€

Viewers noticed and quickly took to the pairing. As The Hill reported on Dec. 12, Today became the most watched morning show in America after Kotb took over for Lauer. Previously, the NBC morning show had trailed ABCโ€™s Good Morning America for nearly a year.

CNN reports that NBC News Chairman Andy Lack formally announced Kotbโ€™s promotion in a memo sent to NBC staffers just before Today went on the air.

โ€œOver the past several weeks, Hoda has seamlessly stepped into the co-anchor role alongside Savannah, and the two have quickly hit the ground running,โ€ Lack wrote. โ€œThey have an undeniable connection with each other and, most importantly, with viewers, a hallmark of Today.โ€

In the meantime, Kotb is still pulling double duty for NBC. As People reports, Kotb will host the top of the morning show with Guthrie from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., as well as the 10 a.m. hour with Kathie Lee Gifford.
