A New York state assemblywoman, Diana Richardson, is facing charges for allegedly beating her 12-year-old son with a broomstick, CBS News reports.

Richardson, who represents Brooklyn, N.Y.’s 43rd Assembly District, was arrested Saturday after her son told police that she caused an abrasion on his arm during an argument they were having at home.

According to CBS News, her son walked into a police station with an arm injury, saying that the argument was over his report card.

Prosecutors said that Richardson was released without bail. Authorities said she admitted to hitting her son but said he pushed her first.
