In the year since President Donald Trump returned to the White House, Americans have feared he’d actually do what he promised. Trump boasted about going after the “enemy within” using the military back in 2024. Now, it seems his plans are coming true.

The nation is still paralyzed after watching an ICE agent named Jonathan Ross shoot and kill Minnesotan Renee Good days into the New Year. In the wake of the tragedy, Trump didn’t pause ICE operations in the city. In fact, he increased ICE presence by a reported 2,000 extra agents. Vice President JD Vance even declared Ross has “absolute immunity,” which only exposes the true power the Trump administration has over law enforcement, and consequently the American people.
There was no warning that Minneapolis would be taken over by Trump-sicced ICE agents. It just happened. Now, the rest of the country is moving towards a police state, and it’s going down right under our noses.
A police state is defined as a the government exerting its power over citizens by weaponizing the military. This force is usually subtle, powerful but dangerous, and that’s exactly what Trump seemingly wants.
The president sent military and immigration officials to several cities– notably Chicago and Washington, D.C.– which has resulted in confusing court battles. “We’re very confident in the president’s legal authority to do this,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters in October about sending in the National Guard. “And we’re very confident we will win on the merits of the law.”
But of course, you’d have to be confident if you have those enforcing the law on your side. Still, critics have openly pushed back against Trump’s attempt to override local governments. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker alleged Trump is trying to “manufacture a crisis,” and even filed a lawsuit to counteract sending National Guard troops to his state. In Minnesota, Gov. Tim Walz warned residents of the president’s alleged attempt to cause chaos in order to enact the Insurrection Act and martial law, we previously told you.
Arguments that the U.S. has reached a police state also point to Trump’s mass deportation policy, which has resulted in a negative net migration report in 2025, according to a Brookings study. The deportation stories of activist Mahmoud Khalil, Kilmar Ábrego García and others hunted and captured by ICE have spooked many in the country– regardless of immigration status. It’s this fear that’s integral to a successful police state.
Democrats have long tried to warn folks of a potential police state. Former Vice President Kamala Harris famously predicted he’d go after his political enemies, use the military against the American people and target civil rights way before she lost the presidential election to him in 2024. Now, not only is Trump proving Democrats right, but he’s exceeding their wildest expectations.
