As the holiday season approaches, access to food for the more than 40 million Americans who depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has been threatened. Now, one organization is working with a popular online delivery service to ensure that food gets to the people who need it most. National anti-violence organization LIVEFREE USA is partnering with DoorDash’s emergency food response effort Project DASH to provide access to fresh, healthy food to the most vulnerable in our communities.

Throughout the month of November, DoorDash will waive merchant fees for the more than 300 Project DASH partner food banks, food pantries, and community organizations around the country. SNAP recipients can also link their EBT card to the DoorDash app or website to have grocery items delivered to their door from participating national chains, including Dollar General, Food Lion, Stop & Shop, and Wegmans, without incurring delivery or service fees.
LIVEFREE founder Rev. Mike McBride says he saw the partnership with DoorDash as an excellent opportunity to leverage his organization’s network of churches and faith leaders to provide relief to people and families during the government shutdown.

“We know that food insecurity disproportionately impacts Black communities in particular, and often when relief efforts are extended, the stigma related to food insecurity keeps so many in our communities from accessing it,” he told The Root in an interview. “This great partnership at least removes some of that barrier and hopefully provides an opportunity to provide material needs to our people during times of extreme desperation.”
McBride called DoorDash’s efforts to help people in need a great example of good corporate responsibility and says he hopes this partnership will be a solution-based response that inspires more generosity across corporate America.

“Our hope is that corporations and other community-based organizations can foster more collaborative partnerships as we continue to deal with all of the pressures of economic hardships, food insecurity and access to healthcare,” he told The Root.
