Andra Day, the popular “Rise Up” singer and actress rarely makes news but that’s unfortunately not the case anymore thanks to the latest update released on Wednesday (Oct. 9). Sadly, it has to do with some professional setbacks and it’s resulting her taking some legal action. Let’s break it down.

Things all south earlier in the week when Day’s soon-to-be former manager Jeff Evans filed a breach of contract lawsuit against her to tune of $850,000. In it, he alleged that the money owed to him is back payments from the singer’s 2024 film “The Deliverance” and about 40% of her publishing advances. Evans also alleges that “between 2012 and 2017, expenses related to Day were greater than income, generating a loss for him,” according to Variety.
However, on Tuesday (Oct. 8), Day clapped back at Evans with a lawsuit of her own, alleging that she was the one who was owed money and that Evans was “caught red-handed stealing.”
“[Evans] siphoned so much money from Day — a quadruple-platinum hitmaker and Golden Globe Best Actress winner — that he left her facing eviction, unable to pay the monthly minimum on her [$300,000-plus] credit card debt and without sufficient funds to tour,” her suit alleges.
Day also described Evans’ claim that he’s owed 40% of her publishing as “exploitative” and wants an accounting investigation to look into his alleged “web of deceit.” Per TMZ, Day additionally claims that Evans “failed to separate her publishing income in a separate account from other money, and extravagantly traveled around with her footing the bill.”
What’s more is that the contract between Day and Evans and Buskin Records was allegedly terminated in March 2025 and that the only way she got entangled with them in the first place was through an introduction by Stevie Wonder’s wife nearly 15 years ago.
“The United States. vs. Billie Holliday” star has yet to publicly comment on the suit but she’s far from the first star to make claims of improper money management against her own team. Here’s hoping things can come to an amicable end soon before it gets too ugly.
