Arizona has voted Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio out of office, dismissing his bid for a seventh term following several legal problems involving racial profiling. Most recently, just a few weeks before the election, Arpaio was officially charged with criminal contempt of court for ignoring a judge’s order to stop profiling Latinos in his signature immigration patrols. Arpaio still faces possible jail time.

Arpaio, 84, became known nationwide through his harsh stance on illegal immigration. On Tuesday, Arizona decided that Democrat Paul Penzone would replace the long-serving Republican.
