It’s time to have a difficult conversation. Too many in this country have been living in a fantasy world where they think America is too special, too great to become a place where elected officials mistreat the people who were born within its borders. But that is exactly what we see happening.

Really, Black people should not be surprised by this. Our sojourn in this land has been one marked by struggle. We had to fight to be free from the chains of slavery. We then had to fight so that we could attend the same schools and drink from the same water fountains as people who, as author Ta-Nehisi Coates calls them, believe they are white.
For us, nothing has been easy in America. So, we should not be surprised by what we are seeing. But for those are fell asleep at the wheel because we had marginal success for the past few decades, like Laurence Fishburne’s character said at the end of “School Daze,” it is time to wake up.
President Donald Trump is bad, yes. But he is not what should terrify us. Look at Project 2025, and you will see that he is only acting upon what was laid out for him. It is those behind that president that should give us pause.
What he is doing to the government is something that people on the far right have wanted to do for decades. And when he uses the racial biases of white Americans for political gain, he is merely following a playbook that was laid out years ago by people who are much smarter than he could ever hope to be.
He is but a figurehead. The real danger are the people who whisper in his ear and convince him to do what is not in the best interest of the country. People like White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who said that America’s population should be capped at 100 million and he wants the majority of those people to be white.
And Attorney General Pam Bondi, who does the bidding of the president and has not, as far as anyone can tell, stopped once to ask if what she is doing is either right or moral.
That’s what should scare us. Trump has blatant racists and authoritarian leaning people behind him giving advice. And no one has enough of a backbone to tell him no.
No more sugar coating. No more burying our heads in the sand ignoring what is staring us in the face. If things do not change quick, fast and in a hurry, America is on the path to authoritarianism. ( A political system where a single person or a small group of people hold absolute power and suppress political freedoms and civil rights.)
The U.S. Supreme Court is paving the way for this to happen. And Congress is acting like a lap dog….doing whatever the president tells them to do. If this continues unchecked, we will we will all face a difficult choice.
In a country in which the leaders are not so quietly trampling upon our hard-earned rights and attacking anyone who disagrees with them, the choice is simple. Either we will be quiet and allow authoritarianism to win…or we will fight.
There is no middle ground, here. We must choose a side.
There are two versions of America forming. One is ruled by fear. The other is made up of decent, imperfect people who believe in love and equality and think that pwer should flow from the people up and not from the top down.
So if you’ve been watching what happening in the country wondering what’s going on, you now have your answer. The question is….what are we going to do about it?
