Alicia Keys Bring Her Quintessential New York Story to Broadway

"For me, Hellโ€™s Kitchen is also a New York story of finding your dreams," said the Grammy-winning artist.

The lights on Broadway are about to get a whole lot brighter. โ€œHellโ€™s Kitchen,โ€ a musical scored by 15-time Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys, is moving from the Public Theater to Broadwayโ€™s Shubert Theater this spring. The historic theater has been home to popular shows, including โ€œA Chorus Lineโ€ and โ€œSome Like it Hot,โ€ which closes in December.

Broadway previews for Hellโ€™s Kitchen begin March 28, with the official opening set for April 20. Presale for tickets begins Friday, Dec. 8, at 10 a.m. ET.

The story, which centers around a 17-year-old girl growing up in Manhattanโ€™s Hellโ€™s Kitchen, is one that Keys had been thinking about for a while.

โ€œGood things take time, and for 13 years, Iโ€™ve been dreaming, developing and finding inspiration for a musical based on my experience growing up in Hellโ€™s Kitchen, NYC,โ€ Keys said in a statement about the show.

But she adds that the story, though inspired by her life, is not a biography.

โ€œItโ€™s a story about family relationships and identity: Who are we? Who do we want to be? Who are we becoming?โ€ she said.

At the helm of the production are some serious Broadway heavy hitters: โ€œHellโ€™s Kitchenโ€ is directed by Tony Award nominee Michael Greif โ€” whose credits include โ€œRentโ€ and โ€œDear Evan Hansenโ€ โ€” and choreographed by Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown, whose credits include โ€œChoir Boyโ€ and โ€œOnce on This Island.โ€ But audiences will also get a special treat: new songs from Alicia Keys.

โ€œThe score features new songs that Iโ€™m really excited to get out into the world alongside many of my album releases that you know, but youโ€™ve never heard like this โ€“ rearranged and reinterpreted,โ€ she said.

Keys says the show is a quintessential New York story, and one she canโ€™t wait to share with a Broadway audience.

โ€œFor me, โ€˜Hellโ€™s Kitchenโ€™ is also a New York story of finding your dreams. And for me, this musical coming to Broadway is the embodiment of that idea,โ€ she said. โ€œI love and respect the art form so much, and Iโ€™m excited to see it come to Broadway.โ€
