After the sad and surprising death of beloved actor John Amos left his close family and fans in shambles due to the personal drama that followed just days after—there’s finally a positive update.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Amos’ daughter Shannon revealed that a date for a memorial for her late father had finally been set. This news comes over two months after the “Good Times” actor’s death on Aug. 21. If you’re wondering why a memorial is happening so late, let us remind you of the shocking allegations we all learned about earlier this month when Shannon and other members of the family claimed that they only just found out about the star’s passing along with the rest of the world through the media on Oct. 2.

What ensued in the immediate aftermath were even more wild allegations that Shannon’s brother KC — with whom Shannon previously went back and forth over claims of elder abuse concerning their father— deliberately withheld the news of his death, his death certificate, information on how he died and cremated the veteran actor “to avoid any potential investigation into the conditions surrounding his final days.”
Despite that, it now looks like fans and the family will have a chance to properly mourn the “Roots” star in late November. Per Shannon’s post, the event will be held on Nov. 23 at the the elder Amos’ alma mater in New Jersey. The tribute is set to honor “not only his achievements as an actor and athlete, but also his enduring commitment to family, his hometown, and the causes he championed.” The event will also be live streamed.
“Though we may have learned the news late, we are sending my dad’s spirit home with a beautiful Celebration of Life and Legacy,” Shannon captioned in the post.
“Known worldwide as ‘America’s Father,’ John Amos broke barriers with his roles in Good Times, Roots, The West Wing, and Coming to America. Beyond the screen, he was a passionate humanitarian—advocating for children with disabilities and joining forces with Nelson Mandela in the fight to end apartheid,” she added.
Additionally, the event will also feature” select speakers, musical performances, and a video tribute to celebrate his extraordinary life and legacy.” Amos passed away at age 84 due to congestive heart failure.
