For a while, T-Pain was known as the Auto-Tune king. Everything he touched was slathered in the annoying sound of Auto-Tune. His use of the device reminded me of children with fries and ketchup: They just don’t know when enough ketchup is too much. And the same could be said about the music that made him popular.

Recently T-Pain made a visit to NPR’s intimate Tiny Desk Concert series and performed his popular “Buy U a Drank” and his new song “Drankin’ Patna” without any use of Auto-Tune. It was just T-Pain and a keyboard player. And it was magic.

I’m quite sure T-Pain could give some of these other R&B cats a run for their money if he decided to go sans Auto-Tune on a whole album.
