5 Recent, Shocking Acts of Racism Against Black Folks in America

From the alleged lynching of a Black man to the rise of “whites-only” towns, Black people should keep their eyes wide open for racism going down.

In a society where racism still is alive and well, it gets hard keeping track of all the foolishness across the country. From Black boys being assaulted by white men to Karens targeting Black folks having a good time, there’s no shortage of examples proving that racism hasn’t gone away.

Politicians like S.C. Sen. Tim Scott and Nikki Haley would have you believe otherwise, but if you ever needed proof that America is not over racism, here are five shocking cases involving Black people.

Alleged Lynching of Black Man

In June, a Black man named Earl Smith was found hanging from a tree in Albany, N.Y., WBNG reported. His death was ruled a suicide by police, but the 58-year-old’s family and civil rights advocates believe something more sinister happened.

Given the horrific history of lynchings in America, may say Smith’s story compares to Jim Crow-era murders of Black people, who were targeted and murdered. “There have been a lot of people found hung in trees around the country,” local activist Salka Valerio said. “They’ve been ruling them as suicides… The investigations are not happening.”

White Man Attacks Black 11-Year-Old

An 11-year-old Black student was standing with his classmates when 43-year-old Paul Bittner walked up to him and punched him in the face. He shoved the child to the ground, resulting in him chipping a tooth, we previously reported.

Bittner yelled “Are you gonna talk to a white man like that?!” before fleeing the scene. He was arrested, all while spewing racial slurs. He pleaded guilty to the hate crime and was sentenced to 41 months behind bars.

The child’s father, DeVante Blow, told The Bellingham Herald last year, “The toughest part about this is that my son was doing nothing… And was attacked because of his skin color. Because he didn’t look like his attacker.”

Rise of ‘Whites-only’ Towns

Segregation officially ended in 1964, but a new “private membership association” is hoping to bring it back with the introduction of “whites-only” towns. Return to the Land (RTTL) already started a flagship neighborhood in the Ozarks, Ark. Residents are Christian white Americans, who all went through a tedious vetting process to verify their ethnic origin.

According to RTTL co-founder Eric Orwoll, they’re not doing anything illegal, but several experts and civil rights advocates have raised skepticisms, according to Sky News. The group is hoping to put more “whites-only” towns on the map soon.

Black Men Forced to Back of Bus– Rosa Parks Style

Xavier Davis was one of two Black men, who boarded a Jefferson Lines bus to Minnesota. But soon after, the bus driver approached them, allegedly telling them to go to the back of the bus. After a verbal argument, the men moved to the back but insisted they did nothing wrong.

Now, Davis is suing Jefferson Lines and the driver, who claimed he asked to men to move because they smelled like marijuana. “Rosa Parks took a stand in 1955, refused to give up her seat, and we’re not going back… Not in 2023, not in 2025,” Davis’ lawyer said.

Corrections Officer Suspended After Racist Video

Brian Davis was suspended from his job at Allegheny County Jail (ACJ) after a now-deleted Instagram video showed him holding a barbed wire-wrapped bat with the words “n****r beater” written on it. The video went viral and word got back to Davis’ bosses.

“I really am afraid to think of if that bat has been used before,” Tanisha Long, Abolitionist Law center organizer told 11 News. “I also think we need to talk to every single person in that jail who has had an encounter with him.”
