Last night’s 81st Golden Globe Awards gave us highlights and lowlights. Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Ayo Edebiri walked away victorious while other Black actors (like Fantasia Barrino and Colman Domingo) weren’t given their due. There’s also the fashion we saw on the red carpet, which also had hits and misses. Here are a few folks that just missed the mark.
Andra Day
We love Andra Day, but the gloves plus the jewelry plus the feathers plus the platform pumps gave showgirl more than Golden Globes. In 2021, Day won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lee Daniels’ biopic “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.”
Jelani Alladin
Jelani Alladin took a risk mixing patterns with his asymmetrical tuxedo jacket, but it just didn’t work for the Broadway star.
Wanda Sykes
Wanda Sykes is known for sporting a clean, tailored suit. This was the case last night but the color made the comedian, whose Netflix special “I’m An Entertainer” was released last year, look a little washed out.
Gina Torres
The incredibly versatile and talented Gina Torres is always stunning, but this getup seemed a bit too casual for last night’s ceremony.
Angelique Jackson
This color was beautiful on Variety Senior Entertainment Writer Angelique Jackson, but the fit made it look like the star was drowning in fabric.
Leah Talabi
Leah Talabi is an influencer who knows how to set trends, but there was nothing trendsetting about the cutout holes on this lifeless frock.
Scott Evans
Oh, Scott Evans. We get the need to be edgy as a media personality and host, but all this jacket did was make us gasp.
Fantasia Barrino
Fantasia’s body is incredible, her makeup is perfect, her pixie is laid. But the lavender tulle at the bottom of this form-fitting dress is simply a no. She was killing it on “The Color Purple” press rounds—what happened?
Noah J. Ricketts
Broadway actor Noah J. Ricketts tried his hand at an unconventional lapel on his tuxedo jacket but it just wound up looking weird.
Erika Alexander
The legendary Erika Alexander can pull off almost anything. However, pairing bold hair with a bold dress is a little too much in this instance—and feels a little random.
David Oyelow
David Oyelow’s monochromatic brown tuxedo left much to be desired.
Seydou Sarr
Senegalese actor Seydou Sarr’s look isn’t bad, per say, but it would have been nice to see him in a little bit of color. Here he is, pictured next to Matteo Garrone.

“Get Out” actor Daniel Kaluuya’s look at this year’s Golden Globes made us want to get out a get him another suit, but the actor is known to stun on the red carpet.
