Witnesses say that during the festivities in Port-au-Prince, the capital, someone on the float was attempting to use some sort of pole or stick to move the power line to make room for the float to pass under. At least 20 people were instantly electrocuted by the flash of sparks. Almost 50 others were injured, the coordinator for the Department of Civil Protection, Nadia Lochard, said.

The float was sponsored by Barikad Crew, a Haitian hip-hop group.
