According to ABC News, the suspect fled the scene following the shooting and has not been apprehended. The Lincoln Parish, La., Sheriffโ€™s Department said that it does not believe that the shooter was a student at the university.

Authorities believe that an altercation in a dorm room escalated into the shooting, which occurred in a courtyard outside. The two young men killed in the incident were identified as GSU senior Earl Andrews and Monquiarious Caldwell, who was not a student at the school. Both men were 23 years old and originated from Farmerville, La. Both young men were pronounced dead at the scene.

โ€œThis is a horrible tragedy. Nothing that anybody wouldโ€™ve ever wanted to have happened,โ€ Sutton said in a statement early Wednesday, according to ABC. โ€œOur prayers are with the victims and their families. Thereโ€™s no place for violence on Grambling State University campus. We always encourage our students to be safe, to be aware, watch who they hang out with, and watch whoโ€™s around at all times. This is a most unfortunate situation.โ€

The campus was not placed on lockdown following the shooting, but students have been advised to stay inside and be vigilant.
