On Friday the 16-month-old girl who was allegedly beaten into a coma by her teenage dad during a Father’s Day visit died at a hospital in New York City’s Brooklyn borough.
According to New York Daily News, Nylah Lewis passed away at 10:40 a.m. in the Maimonides Medical Center after sustaining multiple skull fractures and brain bleeds.
“We ... extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, who wish to have their privacy respected at this sad and difficult time,” the hospital said about the toddler’s death.
The child’s father, 19-year-old Shaquan Taylor, who is the primary suspect, claims that he had nothing to do with the child’s injuries, and that the little girl was injured by a fall. Doctors have been quick to state that her injuries are inconsistent with Taylor’s claims.
Taylor’s original charges of assault and endangering the welfare of a child will likely be elevated to murder charges.
“We will seek to upgrade the charges in the grand jury,” a spokeswoman for the Brooklyn district attorney said.
The Daily News reports that the child’s mom, 17-year-old Tammy Lewis, initially discovered her daughter dying after arriving at Taylor’s building in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood. Taylor tried to prevent Lewis from seeking help for her daughter by beating her as she sought to leave his building.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Lewis wrote, “She’s gone,” and that “he took my baby from me.”
