13 Black Women Celebs Who Had Babies After 40 and Beyond

From first-time moms like Da Brat to those who followed long journeys like Gabrielle Union, their stories inspire motherhood after 40.

Contrary to what you may have been told, motherhood doesn’t always follow a set timeline — and these Black women celebs are living proof. From Janet Jackson welcoming her first child at 50 to Gabrielle Union embracing surrogacy in her 40s, they’ve shown the world that becoming a mom later in life isn’t just possible, it can be powerful. Thriving careers, glowing beauty, bundles of joy, and the coin to provide some comfort? They’ve balanced it all with grace, showing that success and motherhood can coexist, even at 40, and beyond.

Some of these babies were long-fought journeys, some arrived as beautiful surprises, and all of them came with stories that inspire. Here’s a look at the unique paths these Black women celebs took to motherhood after 40.

Eboni K. Williams, the fearless “Real Housewives of New York City” star and TV host, welcomed her daughter Liberty Alexandria Williams after a successful  journey through IVF and a sperm donor, per PEOPLE. Calling her little girl “my remarkable miracle,” Williams told the outlet that despite the help of IVF, “so many things have to go right for the final result of this journey to be a baby.”

“That’s why I’ve called this ‘my remarkable miracle,’ because it really does feel like I’ve been the recipient of some very enormous favor from God above,” the star told the outlet.

Mariah Carey

Affectionately known as “Dem Kids,” Mariah Carey defied expectations when she gave birth to her twins Moroccan and Monroe with then-husband Nick Cannon at the age of 41. That said, according to the “All I Want for Christmas is You” songstress, she never saw herself stepping into motherhood as a child. That changed  after welcoming her twins April 30, 2011.

“Pulling them away from me is so hard,” Carey said of her twins. “It’s unconditional love, and I never, ever thought I was going to have kids – ever… I remember as a child saying ‘I’m never going to get married; I’m never going to have kids,’” she told OUT.

Halle Berry

At 41, Halle Berry welcomed her daughter Nahla Ariela Aubry, and at 47, she gave birth to her son, Maceo-Robert Martinez, per Now I’ve Seen Everything. And according to her, a greater power may have been at work, as she revealed that her daughter Nahla prayed endlessly for a sibling.

“She prayed and prayed for him for like a year and a half, for a baby and a bunk bed, and she got both of those things,” Berry told Ellen DeGeneres, per ABC News.

Maya Rudolph

While the “Saturday Night Live” star previously had three children, comedian Maya Rudolph welcomed her fourth child, daughter Minnie Ida Anderson, in August 2013. The actress gave birth to Minnie — named after Rudolph’s late mother, singer Minnie Riperton, who passed away when Rudolph was just 6 — at 41 years old. And when asked if she’d do it all over again, she didn’t fake the funk for folks whatsoever.

“Hell no,” she said. “I would be a crazy person if that happened! I would be a crazy person!” she exclaimed, per PEOPLE.

Tyra Banks

At 42, Tyra Banks welcomed her son, York Banks Asla, in January 2016 via surrogate with then-partner Erik Asla. After enduring several challenging IVF cycles, Banks found joy and fulfillment in motherhood, embracing her role as a mom with grace and authenticity.

“Coming home to him makes it all worth it,” Banks told PEOPLE back in 2020. “If it’s late, I’ll get into bed and cuddle with him.”

Ashanti

At 43, Grammy-winning singer Ashanti welcomed her first child, son Kareem Kenkaide Haynes, on July 18, 2024, with her husband Nelly. The couple shocked fans when they spun the block on their romance in 2023, before blowing everyone away with their engagement and pregnancy in early 2024.

“It’s like the best,” the “Foolish” singer expressed while reflecting on motherhood with E! News. “Everyone thinks he’s going to skip crawling and go right to walking.”

Uzo Aduba

“My daughter. I’ve never been in love so quickly, so deeply in my entire life. I really don’t know what to say, guys. My heart is full. Thank you, God. I have joy like a fountain. I have witnessed a miraculous thing, and I feel blessed to know you are ours. We love you so much, Adaiba Lee Nonyem — Daughter of the people, treasurer of the mother’s names who came before you,” Award-winning actress Uzo Aduba wrote in a heartfelt post after giving birth at 43 years old back in 2023. “I’m a Mommy you guys.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, so we let that mama do the talking.

Gabrielle Union

Gabrielle Union welcomed her daughter, Kaavia James Union Wade, via surrogate with husband Dwyane Wade at 46 years old. She’s also stepmother to Wade’s three children: Zaire, Zaya, and Xavier. That said, her journey to motherhood wasn’t easy, as the “Bring It On” actress revealed she’s had more miscarriages than she “could confidently count” due to undiagnosed adenomyosis — a condition where the uterine lining grows into the muscular wall of the uterus, per TIME. Today, she couldn’t be happier, and in fact, she wishes she’d started sooner.

“People always ask, ‘Is it worth it? Having kids later in life? There’s a lot that goes into that answer,” Union began in an instagram post. “But in a nutshell: hell yeah, it’s been worth it.”

Iman

Bombshell supermodel Iman had her first child in her 20s, but when she and fellow superstar David Bowie tied the knot, she welcomed her second child at the age of 45. “The difference between rearing a child in your 20s and one in your 50s is one of patience,” Iman told Parade in a 2009 interview.

Angela Bassett

“Black Panther” actress Angela Bassett and her husband, actor Courtney B. Vance, welcomed fraternal twins Bronwyn Golden and Slater Josiah Vance on January 27, 2006. After a seven-year journey with IVF, the couple welcomed their twins via surrogate.

“Just standing there together, holding each other with the realization that this is the moment that we’ve been working toward, praying for … [it’s a dream come true],” Bassett said of their experience, per PEOPLE.

 Tamron Hall

At 48, award-winning journalist and talk show host Tamron Hall welcomed her first child, son Moses, with husband Steven Greener. After a challenging journey with infertility and IVF, Hall describes Moses as her “miracle baby.”

“I just thought I was going to stroll out of my home in this cute outfit,” Hall recalled of the day she went into labor, per She Knows. “My doctor came in and said, ‘I think we’re having a baby today,’ I thought, ‘I’m not ready.’ It just did not play out the way I thought it would. But it was remarkable.”

Da Brat

Rap star Da Brat, real name Shawntae Harris-Dupart, welcomed her first child, son True Legend Harris-Dupart, on July 6, 2023, in Atlanta. The So So Def artist became a mother at the age of 48, publicizing her journey with IVF to encourage other women who may be dealing with similar issues.

“I’m grateful I can inspire people and give them hope… we get so many people saying how much they love and appreciate our story, and they thought that once they turned 35, it was over,” the musician expressed regarding she and her wife’s WeTV series, “Da Brat Loves Judy.”

 Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson postponed her “Unbreakable” tour to focus on starting a family with her then-husband, Qatari billionaire, Wissam Al Mana, per the BBC. And when she was 50 years old, the “All For You” superstar welcomed her first child, son Eissa Al Mana, on January 3, 2017.

Not much was revealed about her journey, however her publicist confirmed: “Janet had a stress-free healthy delivery and is resting comfortably,” per the news outlet.
