Edward M. Kennedy, one of the most powerful and influential senators in American history and one of three brothers whose political triumphs and personal tragedies captivated the nation for decades, died at 77.

Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, was the last survivor of a privileged and charismatic family that in the 1960s dominated American politics and attracted worldwide attention. As heir through tragedy to his accomplished older brothers -- President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (D-N.Y.), both of whom were assassinated -- Edward Kennedy became the patriarch of his clan and a towering figure in the U.S. Senate to a degree neither of his siblings had been.

Kennedy served in the Senate through five of the most dramatic decades of the nation's history. He became a lawmaker whose legislative accomplishments, political authority and gift for friendship across the political spectrum invited favorable comparisons to Daniel Webster, Henry Clay and a handful of other leviathans of the country's most elite political body. But he was also beset by personal frailties and family misfortunes that were the stuff of tabloid headlines.

Teddy was a socialist

Teddy was good at redistributing wealth. His programs and bills increased taxed, raised the national debt and provided legacy entitlements for generations to come. Some of the money will go to deserving people who have no alternative, some will go to people in transition and a lot of money will go to people who have learned to use the system. From Appalachia to the northern ghettoes to the barrios of the west. Some folks need this aid and way too many recieve .

There are those that gloss over the death of Mary Jo, indeed there are people who never heard of her. Teddy ran away from saving this girl. She did not die from drowning, she died from asphyxiation as she struggled to breathe the last trapped oxygen in Teddy's 1967 Oldsmobile that he drove off a bridge. In the meantime Teddy was concoting a story that would cover his ass. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was given a suspended sentence. The Kennedy name kept him out of trouble and jail. This is negligent homocide. The Kennedy influence also managed to have the public records of the incident sealed and kept form the eye of the public.

It is now impossible for Ted to clear up the questions. You can lionize Ted for his penchant for redistribution of wealth, however this incident defines his level of courage. It is very easy to give away other peoples money. It was very difficult for him to call and ask for help when he had an accident. Very curious.

Why ... because humans are base beings. We love to hate, e.g., just read so many of the racists-in-residence on this website.

However, there has been little of Chappaquidick and lots more of Teddy's contributions to over 300 bills in the past 47 years ... unparalleled in the post-bellum Senate.

Edward Moore Kennedy: Centurion of Democracy

Few people manage to be a formidable adversary and ally to some of the same people that respect them as both. Senator Edward Moore Kennedy almost effortlessly exacted that nexus in nearly half a century as the United States Senator from Massachusetts.

Even as the youngest and last brother in a long dynasty of political figures, he managed to operate on another level of politics that eluded most politicos including his brothers. Perhaps it was the little known spiritual connection and personal introspection he had, and its motivation to effectively serve the very people his faith and conscience commanded. Yet, he never displayed it as a public ideology behind his personal commitment to people of every religious reverence and social status. He found a sweet spot in human nature through political science and its art.

No doubt, his own personal challenges grounded and connected him to the common man. Who among us can sanctimoniously throw stones compared to our own missteps in life. At least, as we can recall, he was the rare public figure who would own-up to his mistakes without excuse, arrogance or pretentious rhetoric. That alone, compared to most, makes him stand outside the norm of what we expect and get from our politicians today.

Despite Senator Edward Kennedy's passing, President Barack Obama's earliest and most preeminent political ally, we should expect to see a greatly empowered Chief Executive in the months and years to come. It's much like in the loss of a parent or mentor, you feel an unexpected refinement and empowerment beyond your own strengths from the passing of a symbolic torch.

Surely, with this latest struggle to pass U.S. healthcare legislation by a 44th President, it will and should rightly be renamed in honor of its greatest and longest proponent. Imagine, all it took for one man to see his life's mission was less than one year of hospitalization among the same citizens he would grow to serve on healthcare and numerous other issues that affected their lives.

Though he will be more popularly called the "Lion of the Senate,” for my generation that observed, supported and was greatly impacted by his senatorial accomplishments, he will be better understood and justifiably known simply as a centurion of democracy.
