The prism of race made Henry Louis Gates Jr. appear to be just another suspect.
I loved living in Cambridge, Mass., except when I didn't. And when I didn't was when I had left my apartment late at night to walk to the all-night corner grocery store with just that $10 bill stuffed into my pocket, having left my wallet on the bookcase in the hallway. Then, strolling along, soon as I spotted a police car, I'd tighten: Dammit, I'm gonna get stopped. Maybe some black guy broke into a home two blocks over. Maybe he was over 6 feet and slim like myself. Maybe there was no black guy two blocks over. I could, in that flash, without any ID, picture myself sitting in the police car, handcuffed. And then when the car would pass, when I'd finally exhale, I dared not look back over my shoulder, lest the officer think I was checking him out checking me out through his rearview mirror, which would have been a telltale sign of some kind of wrongdoing in motion.

I'm white, and generally antipathetic to complaints about racism. But I don't tolerate police misconduct.
What kind of American thinks that police deserve to be obeyed without question? We're free citizens of a free republic, and only remain that way because the police are kept in check. If we had cowards like "erp" and "paymyownway" two hundred years ago, America would still be paying homage to foreign monarchs.
The police were wrong. Making excuses for them only shows you to be a miserable excuse for an American. Patriotism is rooted in self-reliance.
Instead of relying on police to protect you and your property, invest in firearms. A decent shotgun costs only a couple hundred dollars, and can be used with ammunition of varying degrees of lethality. Burglars aren't in it to get shot, they're in it for easy money.

Mr. Gates,
I want you to know, I am a caucasian, not a whitey, a cracker, a crackah, a honkey, or any of the other names African Americans refer to "us" as. I have NEVER been on public assistance, and have been working since I was 15 years of age. I have also never been arrested for any crime, because I live my life in a peaceful, honest manner.
I do want you to know, IF I pushed my door in with another person...the police would come to my home. They WOULD demand to see proof of my identity and proof of my right to be on the property.
You see Mr. Gates, I would be treated exactly as you were.
IF I chose to be a jerk and refused to come out of the residence, there is a very good chance the police would actually pull their gun/guns on me. You see, I would expect this. If I were asked to step out onto the front porch, why..I would not hesitate to do what was asked and would have the intelligence to understand WHY the police were doing what they were doing.
However, you apparently feel that you are above the very law enforcment that attempted to PROTECT YOU and YOUR PROPERTY. Then you have the gall to go on public television and state that you OWN EXPENSIVE ART....
BAITING the police. Darned if they do (try to protect you and your property) and darned if they don't. Mr. Gates you are attempting to retire as the new Martin Luther King which you are not. You see, Mr. King would have gracioiusly cooperated with police, as Mr. King was an individual that respected others and their jobs.
You Mr. Gates have used your skin color to hide behind, and attack others with. It is a sad day in our nation and in the world. You set this up and you know it.
BS! "Because I am a black man in America." Listen Gates, how many times have you been arrested before now? I understand you are 58 years of age. STOP TRYING TO BECOME A VICTIM.
Anybody without a chip on his shoulder would have given the officers an ID, thanked them for their vigilance in protecting his property and made a donation the police benevolent fund. Law suit for what? Gates acted like a jerk. BTW - They come in every color of the rainbow. Blacks aren't exempt.
Brother Haygood, this is the best, clearest and most cogent essay on the state of Professor Gates' mind -- and that of any person like him in similar situations -- I've read.
Thus far I've avoided commenting on this repulsive incident because so much blogging about it's been circular, as are most discussions about race and class in this country.
But you nailed it, brother, in part by being brief, personal and on point.
Props to you.
And solidarity with Professor Gates -- and any person, regardless of color and gender -- unduly threatened at the hands of the police.
Is it any wonder the rates of stress and heart disease is through the roof among black folk?
