The first black president tells the NAACP that they control their own futures.
Everybody wants to know how, if at all, we should think about race in the Obama era. Well, President Barack Obama himself offered an answer in his speech to the NAACP last night. The address—his first explicitly on race as president—put a coda on his remarkable Philadelphia campaign speech, in which he addressed questions raised by his relationship with Jeremiah Wright. Taken together, the two represent what we might as well call the Obama doctrine on race: It still matters, deeply, but individual will and familial support are ultimately what govern life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in America.
It’s classic Obama, in that it rises above the fray of an old debate by declaring everybody the winner. In this case, the shouting match he wants to end surrounds the question of opportunity. Do individuals or the inequalities into which they’re born matter most? The president comes down squarely in the middle—or, to borrow as he did from MLK, it’s both/and. Which, of course, is obvious to anybody born black, brown or poor, or all of the above. The children of black and brown strivers across generations will recognize a familiar, if more politic, refrain in Obama’s message—assume these white folks are gonna be racist, then figure it out anyway.
“Yes, if you’re African American, the odds of growing up amid crime and gangs are higher,” Obama preached last night. (and it was a sermon). “Yes, if you live in a poor neighborhood, you will face challenges that someone in a wealthy suburb does not. But that’s not a reason to get bad grades, that’s not a reason to cut class, that’s not a reason to give up on your education and drop out of school. No one has written your destiny for you. Your destiny is in your hands.”
It’s important that we hear both halves of this message, though. Early press reports have, not surprisingly, focused on Obama’s call for personal responsibility among black youth and black parents, a theme he’s hammered repeatedly since he emerged on the national stage. From Booker T. Washington to Bill Cosby, America loves nothing so much as hearing a popular black man declare that racial inequality is a problem best solved through the self-improvement of those seeking said equality.
But just as important as the “no excuses!” refrain blaring from this morning’s headlines is an earlier, quieter discourse on the nature of inequality today. Racism, defined as overt discrimination based on skin color, is largely a thing of the past, Obama declared. We’ve all inherited, however, the racist structure Jim Crow bequeathed. “Prejudice and discrimination are not even the steepest barriers to opportunity today,” Obama offered. “The most difficult barriers include structural inequalities that our nation’s legacy of discrimination has left behind; inequalities still plaguing too many communities and too often the object of national neglect.”
That’s a concise articulation of how and why race does, alas, still matter. The president should say it more often—both to advance our national conversation about race and to support ambitious public efforts to dismantle those structural inequalities. “The object of national neglect” was steadily shoved to the edges of public policy at the 20th century’s close. Obama said last night that he does not embody the end of America’s struggle with race. He can, nonetheless, get us closer to that end by making the case for public responsibility as compellingly as he’s made the case for personal accountability.

very good post! Change happens at the grass roots level. I noticed, in my town, that when Obama was elected we were out in full force. However when there are elections for the mayor, school board, sherriff....you hear crickets on our side of town.
When did the ills of the black community become the duty of the man we elected President. He has the view of most Ivy league educated African-Americans, including Henry Louis Gates who until " recent events" thought that many black men brought police scrutiny on themselves by virtue of appearance. The Bill Cosby, Cornell West,Tavis Smiley types all have sweeping views of what they think the state of the black community is and whom they think should lead the charge of change. I say neither group is completely wrong but at the same time neither is entirely right.
Racism is alive and well in this country but so is complacency is the black community to some respects.Real change has to come from the local levels not National one, simply because what plagues Atlanta is very different from the ills of Detroit. Poverty lines, standards of living, public education standards are all different, as they should be!!! Poverty in cities like Chicago and Houston would easily be the suburbs in Louisville, KY or Wichita, KS, and Athens, GA thus the needs of the impoverished, disenfrachised, and undereducated are vastly different and should not be addressed in grand and sweeping rhetoric or policies. The failure of "No Child Left Behind" as evidence that the national government has no clue how to deal with local problems. So please lets not make the same error in judgement with our 1st black President that we made with the 43 white Presidents before him. He has very little control over the everyday problems of anyone that is not in military uniform. Our champions of change are right in front of us everyday. Our pastors, alderman, city councils, state gov. officials. President Obama was right to say our change has to come from within our community by challenging our local politicians and leaders the way we have done our new President.

In or around the late 1700's, a band of upstart slave-owners and northern benefactors gathered around in a room and declared themselves a part of historical record, calling themselves free men and sovereigns who drew their birthrights from their Creator.
Some 280 odd years later, descendants of free men (yes, free men = your ancestors, we were here FIRST!!!) are held in the mental bondage of expecting, time after time, hope after undying hope, that the one who hates and despises him for no other reason than jealousy at feeling excluded from the greatness of history, will finally accept him as an equal.
Your President Obama is correct, the future is up to those who will face it with something more than excuses.
The truth is, we have adopted the educational, moral, societal, relationship, career, religious, dietary habits of one who, despite his missteps (forgive the Albino, he is still a BABY in the world) still has the sense to follow behind the wisdom of YOUR ANCESTORS. That's right.
The Masons and Rosecrucians and Bilderbergers, Council on Foreign Relations Members, Trilateral Commission members, the EU, the supposed "queen" of england isle, up to the Vatican itself, ALL FOLLOW THE RULES OF YOUR ANCESTORS.
YOU DO NOT. You stare in the face of one who would unblinkedly murder hundreds of millions of brown - melanated- Sun People elsewhere in the world, and you still wonder why he does not love YOU? He doesn't love himself, he feels like a nervous kid brother, knowing his big brother will kick his scrawny a$$ back into his rightful place once he finds out what he has been doing.
He is playing with our toys, stealing our role and position as the Guardian, Master and Infinite Realm Dweller of the Divine Mental States, a world which he is unable to enter.
Think about it: Why, if you are inferior, unworthy, and needing to prove yourself, are you proving it to HIM? Prove it to yourself, prove it to your people, by adopting your own wholistic educational systems, your own Wholistic healthcare, your own wholistic diet, your own wholistic culture, speech, dress, and manner of relating Yourself to each other and Your Divine Place in the Universe.
Or, keep on keepin' on, trying to get him to change his madness into something humane.
*Hint* If 2,000 years of enforcing the borrowed concepts of Kemetic spirituality into "Christianity" hasn't changed them from their ways, nothing will.
We must not peer into the darkness for the light. We must accept that darkness and light are complementary effects of the Universe.
He is trying to get you to see, the European's time is not long to come, his way of thinking, his way of life is not sustainable.
You MUST make Your own Way. It is incumbent upon us. Nothing else really matters at this point.
I'll bet the rest of the world hears the creaking in the floors, they see this house about to crumble.
Don't be a fool and try and keep massa's house pumpin out more hot biscuits for the picnic...
The Natural Order of Life is being re-established in our minds, and as We, the Great Body of the Sleeping Giant that is our collective unconscious awakens, there will be nothing else to do but create what we desire and move towards what is best.
Those who know not cannot guide us towards a better future.
Thank you, Mr. Obama. He can't come right out and say it, but that's the underlying message.
