WASHINGTON (AP) — With mugs of beer and more-carefully chosen words, President Barack Obama tried to push himself and the nation beyond a political uproar, hailing a "friendly, thoughtful" conversation with the black professor and white policeman whose dispute had ignited a fierce debate over race in America.

"I have always believed that what brings us together is stronger than what pulls us apart," the nation's first black president said after the highly anticipated meeting ended. "I am confident that has happened here tonight, and I am hopeful that all of us are able to draw this positive lesson from this episode."

Under the canopy of a magnolia tree in the early evening, Obama joined the other players in a story that had knocked the White House off stride: Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge, Mass., police Sgt. James Crowley. Vice President Joe Biden was with them on a Rose Garden patio.

"We agreed to move forward," Crowley said later when asked if anything was solved. "I think what you had today was two gentlemen agreeing to disagree on a particular issue. I don't think that we spent too much time dwelling on the past. We spent a lot of time discussing the future."

I beg to disagree.......What have we learned?.....That even in today's society blacks have no rights not even in our own home.......What Crowley did was wrong......There is something call the Constitution which grants us freedom of speech.....so regardless of what Professor Gates said to Crowley....that wasn't any reason for him to be arrested. As long as he didn't threaten the officer.

Once Crowley was shown proof that this is Professor Gates House....Crowley should have left.....He shouldn't have been invited to the White House....He should be fired from the Police Force. Wecome Prof. Gates to the Republican Bourgeoisie

Dear Prof. Gates,

As we all know now, with empirical certainty, you were arrested at home, for minding your own business. Everything you did at home, on the porch of your house, was legal. You even had a constitutional right to express your observation, at whatever pitch or unites of volume you chose, in your unsolicited dialogue with your uninvited guest.

You were, for all we know, at a party in your own home, and a certain gentleman was merely a party crasher once you established, by flashing your ID which demonstrated that you were, Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

At the very instant of your arrest, as President Obama, a former Harvard law student, and subsequent lawyer you were arrested as Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the rightful resident at your premises, not for breaking and entering, but on a stupid disorderly conduct charge.

Why do we say the arrest was stupid? The motivation for the investigation was that the police suspect the presence of a person not lawfully permitted to be on the premises.

Furthermore, none of the conduct alleged at the locational remotely resembled any violation of law, and certainly not disorderly conduct while at home.

"Stupidity" is simplest and briefest possible description of your arrest.

But unfortunately, the President Obama had not calibrated for the stupidity of the media, or the public.

President Obama, previously head of the prestigious law Review did not need any more facts than those he already had: upon investigating a possible burglary in progress, the "perpetrator" was arrest while at home for alleged disorderly conduct.

By sweeping this absurd transgression against your constitutional rights what your doing is empowering the Police to abuse their authority when confronting uncooperative persons less privileged than you are.

Crowley refusal to apologize to you means that he is not admitting that he has done any wrong to you.

And that means, to the policemen throughout all jurisdictions of the United States than a man while at home maybe arrested for disorderly conduct and even the President of the United States cannot help him right the wrong.

Prof. Gates, we know you are neither poor, nor a member of the working class, and it is unlikely that you'll be confronted by the police - especially now that you've become a media stare.

But what about all other Americans who are economically less privileged than you? I'm inquiring about Americans of all colors, Black, White, Brown, Green? Racial distinctions make no difference to this possibility of abuse in the hands of police authority.

Your political mistake was in your belief that the misconduct you uncovered affected only persons of color. The police misconduct you encountered affects so-called "white people" as well. It affects anyone who, unwisely, provokes an officer of the law in less than a deferring way.

Certainly, it is better to behave in a way that a policeman would not find any reason to make an arrest, or even an appearance. And one could always make a civilian complaint after the police have left.

But for whatever reason, as in your case, one may not be at one's best on a particular day. That day should not be a day one gets arrested.

It would be a good idea for children in primary schools to be taught how to treat officers of the law - with the utmost respect.

It would be a good idea to better train our officers of the law how to defuse confrontational situations - how better to handle provocations.

But in your situation I ask that you "Do the Right Thing" (Spike Lee). Please do not sweep this incident "under the rug." History has chosen you here to make the word better for the rest of us in the United States - and not just people of color,

By all means, "just get along" with Officer Crowley. Go to the ball game with him. But don't forget that President Obama criticism was of the Cambridge police. The Cambridge police maintains, to this day, that Sergeant Crowley did things "by the book." So it's that book that needs to be re-written. And the best way to do that, I think, is for you to "Sue the Bastards" [famous book title].

PS: Another option is dramatization, a docudrama. It would be interesting, to say the least, if you made a video about the whole think. Perhaps using all the participants in real-life as actors.

You could begin with your presence in China.

Followed by jamming of your door. Your pushing the door open, etc.
Commentary by police authorities, lawyers, judges, might be ideal.

The "teaching moment' might be a great contribution to the American public. I really believe you could take this time to improve the relations between the Police and the Public. Here, I truly believe you could do more good than all the Profiling legislation to be encoded into law. So please consider a Docudrama of what happened to you. Can you imagine, Crowley again handcuffing you - but this time the whole ordeal captured on Video?

Mini Truth and Reconciliation Council

I've been very impressed with the whole "Truth and Reconciliation" approach to conflict resolution, so I'm generally supportive of the President's approach here. He's leading by example to promote dialog. I'm not so sure about the beer angle, it seems to artificially gloss over the fact that Gates and Crowley have some serious issues with each other. Dialog in conflict resolution doesn't have to be, perhaps shouldn't be, relaxed and unemotional. The point is to tell your side of the story so your opponent can understand your viewpoint, your pain.
