"Uptown" is eclipsed by Obama's Chicago; the NYC power Rangel wielded is dispersing to Brooklyn and Queens.
For decades, Harlem has been the lodestar of black politics in New York City and beyond. From Harlem came the city’s first black mayor, David N. Dinkins, the state’s first black governor, David A. Paterson, and generations of other influential black politicians and operatives.
To Harlem went presidential aspirants and other future stars of the Democratic Party, eager to pay homage and seek blessings. But now the once-vaunted Harlem political machine is on the verge of collapse.
After 19 tumultuous months in office, Mr. Paterson has been urged by White House aides to abandon next year’s election, a potentially mortal blow to the already embattled governor. Charles B. Rangel, Harlem’s elder statesman and congressman for 40 years, has been weakened by investigations into his unpaid taxes ...

I agree with your comments "Originalman" — Of course, it is definitely not my view either (in my "Politics, Economics and The New Harlem Renaissance" comment below) that Congressman Powell was a disgrace either, only that it was disgraceful how he was hounded out of office by Dixiecrats, lame liberals and GOP sycophants — with the blessings of the usual gaggle of appeasing go-along-to-get-along 'Plantation Negroes' of the day.
You're right to say he did a lot for African Americans (in and beyond Harlem) during that time, at the height of the Civil Rights and Black militancy movement — despite his sometimes colorful personality — which in hindsight was forgivable considering the open, covert, illegal and freaky acts of so many other national public officials — then and since.
As I remember it, Congressman Rangel was the default candidate from Harlem — and able to get elected because he was the Congressionally, socially, and politically palatable version of what Capitol Hill wanted and expected from Black Congressmen back then. Adam Powell was perceived as the 'Uppity Negro' at a time when genuine political empowerment and brinkmanship by a Black public official on the national stage was rare, and very unwanted — abusively criticized, threatened and kept in check.
Oh my! — how things have changed. Huh!

The fact that Harlem is being "outshined" (pun intended) by Chicago's Southside is way past due. As much as I love New York, at the risk of appearing a Chit-Town Chauvinist, I must make the point that Harlem has never really been the heart of "Black" America. It was merely designated that by "white" folks mainly because of being in the hustling, hype capitol of the nation, New York City.
The famous "Harlem" Globetrotters are a case in point. They were all from Chicago's Wendell Phillips High, a school that I went to. But I never knew it until I was well in my 40s because of the power of propaganda over substance. I'd guess even now, most Southsiders still think the Harlem Globetrotters were from Harlem.
And, when it comes to politics too, Chicago is Black America's champion, not because we're any more politically astute, but we comprise a larger portion of the over all population and have a more homogeneous background. Where New York "Blacks" are from all over the world, most Chicago "Blacks" are straight from the South. That's why I call us, "Mississippi, North".

"As for Rangel and the like — how ironic that he replaced the disgraced Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. — look for his tumultuous and steady fall sometime after the fall of 2009. You heard it here first — and you can play that number straight."
I would never consider Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. a disgrace. He was able to accomplish more as one man in Congress then the entire CBC together, and since they became the CBC. I wish we had a Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. today!
It is definitely time for Charlie to go, the problem with African American leadership is they don't know when to leave, and they don't take the time to groom someone younger for the job, who isn't related to them.
Harlem's power has never been linked to or dependent on just one individual. Everyone from public officials to number writers, and hustlers — a.k.a. 'independent entrepreneurs' — and all the intellectuals, artists and activists in between, have been a force and significant influence in Harlem politics over the decades. Every longtime Harlemite knows this.
This article has some validity, although it truly just skims the outer most layer of the surface of what is and will be behind Congressman Rangel's eventual and overdue political demise — among other dysfunctional local Black politicos.
Mr. Confessore should confess he has little or no clue about the political paradigm and power shift that's been underway in Harlem. There is an expanding generation of pragmatic and proactive activists that have presented themselves over the last five years. Several of these 'young turks' have even run for elective office (most times with the blessings and support of some very pissed-off influential 'old heads') against the calcified politicos that have wasted or pimped Harlem's political, cultural, socioeconomic and real estate assets.
This new breed is far less likely to play the go-along-to-get-along political games in favor of a new flavor of hard nose coalition activism and constituent brinkmanship. They are also pragmatic in the sense that they see the caldron of politics, economics, multiculturalism and real estate power as connected to reinvigorating Harlem's power over the next 10-90 years. Even to the extent of recognizing the multi-ethnic gentrification that has occured here in many cases is a strategic advantage for strengthening the community's power base.
Harlem has always been, and will always be, at its core an ethnically diverse African American community of Blacks and Browns from every part and hue of the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America. In all too many cases, until someone speaks, you may not be able to distinguish a Harlemite from any other person on the globe.
Whites have always resided here in significant numbers from Harlem's start — before, during and since my childhood. My next door neighbors in the 50s were a loving Irish and Black couple whose daughter would babysit me. Surely, there is some concern about the new Whites and others as to whether they are just residential interlopers causing a decrease in affordable housing for everyone, and/or transient property flippers determined or intending to dilute and discard Harlem's cultural core — the real flavor that most still favor, and the main reason attracting more to this world famous community.
Nevertheless, Harlem is quietly going through a transitional socioeconomic and political upgrade — not a cultural one — being effected by a diverse population of young and not so young Black and Brown urban professionals who are connected to the many older residents (many of them friends and family) who are equally far fed-up with the parasitic political officials that prefer to hold on rather than move on with their ill-gotten integrity and gains.
Speaking of the new young Harlem political brinkmanship that's happening, both publicly and privately, in due time these old barriers and barons are being strategically removed — and it won't be a moment to soon or late — by hook, crook, politics and politricks.
As for Rangel and the like — how ironic that he replaced the disgraced Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. — look for his tumultuous and steady fall sometime after the fall of 2009. You heard it here first — and you can play that number straight.
The reporters at New York Times might consider taking the 'A Train' for a few months, travel river-to-river from 110th to 155th streets, and do some real insider homework before serving-up their version of the 4-1-1 on Harlem.
