i think you may be overthinking this. black expression comes in many forms. i'm happy to see the coming generation understand that they are individuals, not a morsel representing The Race...Besides that, I don't know what to tell you other than we can't all be Sidney Poitier

I'm curious if an intern or interns thought this video was an enterprising feature or if it was a collective editorial decision to post this story in a display of pride showcasing the hollow excitement of talking about their personal commitments to fashion as well as the school's. It's embarrassing. It's embarrassing on so many levels. This is not flattering at all for Howard's brand identity. However it is accurate and obvious that those who are supposed to be custodians of Howard's brand are obviously serving two masters and not minding the store.
It's one thing to want to feel spector of relevance in knowing the Washington Post covers your school finally but for...fashion??? It seems that so many magazines know Howard is a fashion conscious Mecca but what else is Howard known for in real-time agency of academic rigor and accomplishment other than staples? And now the Washington Post is asserting that Howard's staple in being a fashion conscious campus is validated by evidence-based submissions gleefully offered by the eager-to-self-promote and self-aggrandize, shallow student body surveyed on the campus to deposit information about the superficial obsessive sensibilities of the school's high-esteem for fashion engagement as part of the brand.
I find it utterly embarrassing that for years I could not bridge relationship with students because their cognition is as only as seasoned and mature to understand one-dimensional eclipse of understanding how to worry about what things look like instead of the complex systems. In trying to engage them in wider concepts, they are only all that I met just like the students that was tapped to be on film. And I met a lot of Howard students and mostly all were the same archetypes of those students. That is the legacy of Howard. That is the living, active legacy and the Washington Post approved to showcase it. They knew.
What's so disappoiting is the lack of sophistication of these students featured in not realizing they made themselves officials spokespeople on the record that Howard is a fashion-obsessed university. In this day and age of social media and social media abuses, I would think students would be orientated of media and media manipulation. But there isn't much manipulation here. The videographer just dangled a carrot approving of the fashion and those students ate it up. Reciprocate a Howard students flair and you can get what you want out of them. That's a value quotient I learned about years ago.
Those students are products of the culture in wanting to feel special but they don't/didn't understand the brand of their school is more important than fleeting fashion and their desperate needs for attention and approval of the performance art of showcasing one's dedication to their outfits.
I just don't know how a college president and administration could not share with the student body the by-products of editing and how everything they do and say as Howard students live--in public and on film--defines the brand. As much as acts of simulation of fame-seeking like being interviewed on camera is to so many an accomplishment, these students should know that this feature was not necessarily a good public relations piece for their school. It's very surreptitious in how it was done and how it comes across. I would even believe a Black person had their affect on producing this but the framework clearly the story the Washington Post wanted to shape in showing people that they knew it was going to be an easy sensational piece to put together easily. They knew the students would perform as well as the alumni and visitors.
And this is probably just a random sample of students the videographer picked from. But these students exhibited are the ones the storyteller deduced from the others interviewed in footage that are edited out to get this theme framed that Howard has supercilious students motivated by a chance to self-promote, shimmy their fashions, and perform for others to have to receive that stimuli in noticing them. The need to have people see one's satorial style has always mattered to us since slavery when we mocked colonizers doing the cakewalk and wearing formal fashion. (We probably craved for hand-me-downs of Miss Anne's to wear when we did the work. And that was when it probably became Howard's obsession.)
My White liberal-elite co-worker that lives in Le Droit Park mentioned that she noticed the peculiar obsession of Howard students. She admitted her wonderment and ambiguity over what she deduced was the time she knew that those students had to dedicate to fashion, jockeying, exploration for garnering attention, plotting showcase of the fashion, and wondered how they could really have mental room/cognition for much more meaty and conceptual because fashion-addiction is a time-eater and an emotional and academic distraction. I agreed with her. I explained to her that the agency of fashion-obsession by Howard students and young people in general has had decades of systemic effects of social parameters and social conditions that the school should not have had to deal with in sponsoring so much valuation of what Howard became to be.
The fashion-addictive culture of Howard and so many other HBCUs and other colleges have too much importance in young people's live. They are mostly consumerists first and students second. Scholars they are not because if they were real scholars they would not be slaves to comsumerist culture that mocks and co-opts them for everyone to see how rudimentary Howard is. And those custodians--supposedly the matriculating students and those elders impressing upon them what the Howard brand is and should not be-- they allow people/the world to see the school's living legacy depreciated by wreckless caretaking of such approved hollow ideals of nonethingness worth in (not) truly increasing Howard's real-time valuation. (I would want smarter students attending my school.)
