At least one U.S. soldier in uniform opened fire on troops at Fort Hood, Tex., Thursday, killing at least 12 people and wounding more than 31 others, officials said.

Officials said two other soldiers suspected of being involved in the shooting were in custody. The shooting occurred at a processing center and nearby theater where soldiers were preparing to deploy to the wars in Iran and Afghanistan, officials said.

Lt. Gen. Bob Cone, the commanding general of Fort Hood, said one gunman was shot at the processing center and that two others suspected of involvement were apprehended later.

President Obama called the incident "a horrific outburst of violence."

Back in '96 I met a few Iraq 1 veterans on my job. They referred to the arab workers on our job as "Camel Jockeys and Sand N-----s. On an Abc news story about the Fort Hood gunman they pointed out that he was constantly harrased by his fellow comrades as a "Camel jockey". Was it this that could have made him snap? Hmm, we better find out soon huh? A furious soldier with lethal weapons at his disposal can reack hell on his taunters in a short time.

but someone in the Army had to pick up on what was going on in this guy's head. In my officer candidate class in the Navy twenty five years ago we had a Muslim convert who had very vocal anti US sentiments. Complaints from many of my class members where enough to get him kicked out.....

Maybe the Army thought as a non combatant, Hasan wouldn't be a problem, or maybe they wanted to get their money's worth for all the education this guy received. Seems they were wrong on both counts.

is put oin trial for treason and then hung.

This story breaks my heart in so many ways. It's one thing for those of us that signed up for military service to go into combat. Our families haven't made such a commitment. This monster has no excuse for his brutality. I don't care how many horror stories he had to listen to. It was his responsibility to HELP. (What happened to "first do no harm"?) Our soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen deserve proper treatment for the mental anguish of war.

I won't say if I'm for or against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but I will say we clearly need to focus more on the homefront protection and defense. I'm sure the Army handled the situation the best the could. No one expects on of our own to turn on us. What troubling times we live in.

I wish we could all just face the facts about PTDS. It's Shell Shock, pure and simple. Let's not give it a friendlier, cuddlier term. My thoughts and prayers go out to my brothers and sisters in arms and their families.
