Roxanne's revenge was sweet indeed.

Twenty-five years after the first queen of hip-hop was stiffed on her royalty checks, Dr. Roxanne Shante boasts an Ivy League Ph.D. - financed by a forgotten clause in her first record deal.

"This is a story that needs to be told," Shante said. "I'm an example that you can be a teenage mom, come from the projects, and be raised by a single parent, and you can still come out of it a doctor."

Her prognosis wasn't as bright in the years after the '80s icon scored a smash hit at age 14: "Roxanne's Revenge," a razor-tongued response to rap group UTFO's mega-hit "Roxanne, Roxanne."

The 1984 single sold 250,000 copies in New York City alone, making Shante (born Lolita Gooden) hip hop's first female celebrity.

She blazed a trail followed by Lil' Kim, Salt-N-Pepa and Queen Latifah - although Shante didn't share their success.

After two albums, Shante said, she was disillusioned by the sleazy music industry and swindled by her record company. The teen mother, living in the Queensbridge Houses, recalled how her life was shattered.

"Everybody was cheating with the contracts, stealing and telling lies," she said. "And to find out that I was just a commodity was heartbreaking."

But Shante, then 19, remembered a clause in her Warner Music recording contract: The company would fund her education for life.

The information you posted about louis vuitton is so useful, I am expecting for your next post.

Nice articles, but I am not clear about the point you mentioned about how to distinguish fake and real louis vuitton online shop.

You seem to be professional about louis vuitton, can you advise where to buy real louis vuitton sale?

None of this story is true, it never happened.

According to a article written by slate:

"An investigation by Slate has revealed:

According to Warner, neither it nor any of its subsidiary record labels ever had a contract with Shanté, and it was not obligated to pay for her education. Indeed, there's no evidence that it ever did.

Shanté—real name Lolita Shanté Gooden—doesn't have a Ph.D. from Cornell or anywhere else. Indeed, she admitted it in an interview with Slate. And Cornell has no record of Gooden (or "Shanté") ever attending or receiving a degree.

According to Marymount Manhattan College records, Shanté enrolled there but dropped out less than four months later without ever earning a degree.

New York state records indicate that no one named Lolita Gooden or Roxanne Shanté is licensed to practice psychology or any related field."

"according to Cornell records, provided through a service called National Student Clearinghouse to which the university directed me, Cornell "was unable to locate either a degree or enrollment record for the subject of your verification request."

"Marymount Manhattan College records, also provided through National Student Clearinghouse, indicate that "Lolita S. Gooden" attended "02/06/1995 to 05/23/1995" but did not earn a degree. "Student withdrew for the semester and never returned," according to a notation from Marymount Manhattan. And in an interview, Marymount Manhattan communications director Manny Romero confirmed: "She was only here for the three months in 1995. She did not graduate from Marymount Manhattan." Romero would not discuss the source of Shanté's tuition money, citing federal privacy laws."

"In a prepared statement, Warner denied that it ever had a contractual relationship with Shanté, explaining that "her agreement was with an independent record label known as Cold Chillin' Records."

"And Warner's statement made clear that it had no obligation to pay for Shanté's education: "Our examination of that file [of Warner's relationship with Cold Chillin'] ... has not revealed any evidence of any 'education clause' in any agreement."

"Shanté's claim to be a "doctor" also fails to check out. She's not a medical doctor, and she admits (and Cornell confirms) that she lacks a Ph.D. And a search of the New York Office of the Professions licensing database fails to reveal licenses to practice psychology or in any related field for either "Lolita Gooden" or "Roxanne Shanté."

Here is another article debunking the claims made by Roxanne Shante and the Daily News article:

Nothing about Roxanne Shantes claims or the Daily News article are true.

She does not have a PH.D.

She never went to Cornell.

Warner never payed her $200,000 to finance her education.

She does not have a therapy practice.

Roxanne Shante made up the whole story, probably so she could get herself more attention, or to make herself look good.

It is really pathetic how far some people will go just to get attention.

I'd like to see B and HOVA manage that! Guess diamonds are enough for some folks.

This is so great that this got in her contract. It is a great personal victory for her.

"Ph.D. in psychology from Cornell" - now that is something to be proud of they don't just give those out. Ph.Ds take a lot of hard work and I am sure she will look back on every second and know the work it took to get to that degree.

You Go Dr. Shante!!! :)

Nice to see someone, especially from my generation, work their way up from hardships to become a true success. Very proud of her.

It's outrageous that the studios would resent paying a few hundred thousand tuition for someone who was a _star_, even if only for a little while. It's bad enough if they cheated on the straight pay; I have no sympathy for people who would do that.

I grew up in Jersey, and am old enough to remember when that jam was blaring out of boom-boxes all across the school yard, so it's great to see how she was able to forge ahead and make something for herself after the spotlight of rap celebrity faded. The fact that she was able to stick to her guns and force “the man” to honor his contract (which they are infamous for breaking, just ask Native Americans) is a terrific story! Let this be a lesson for other young rap hopefuls, you may be a one-hit wonder (if you’re extremely lucky) so if somehow you are able to secure a record deal, then by all means necessary make sure you add this education clause to your contracts. I will pass this on to my niece, a young teen mom who yearns for a recording career.
